Places For A Mini Break In The UK

If you are trying to save the cash this year, then an overseas holiday might just be out of the question. If this is the case, then a mini break might be the ideal way to recharge the batteries and enjoy a change of scenery. Great Little Breaks is a great source of the best cheap breaks in the UK, and I thought that I might share with you some of my favourite places for mini breaks that work in both Spring and Summertime.

London

You might be thinking that London does not sound the kind of city where you can enjoy a budget mini break, but you would be wrong. There are many budget priced hotels and hostels in the city, and with many of the capitals museums being free to enter (The V&A, Museum of London, Natural History Museum and the British Museum being just a few with no entry charge.) and you can enjoy a wealth of culture without spending a penny. Enjoy a host of streetfood options in places like Camden, or take a picnic in one of the City’s beautiful park areas. If you decide to see a show, get your tickets from one of the boxes in Leicester Square for cheap bargains (we saw ‘The 39 Steps’ for just £10 per ticket). You can enjoy a wonderful break and not break your spending ban.

Lincoln

Lincoln is a stunning city, complete with a castle and an incredible cathedral, but, for me, one of the things I most love about it is that you can park the car up and do your sightseeing and shopping on foot. Travel down Steep Hill and enjoy the wonderful vintage shops and independent stores that make the shopping experience so vibrant and stylish. The key to enjoying Lincoln is to avoid the chains like Costa and Primark, and instead look at all that is unique when it comes to shopping and food.

Tewkesbury

The site of a very famous battle, Tewkesbury is a picturesque English town which is full of Grade 2 listed buildings that define the beautiful and the quirky. The Abbey is an architectural wonder, and is free to enter, although donations are gratefully accepted. The pleasure gardens are also lovely, and well worth a wonder around on a warm day. The town has a host of restaurants, vintage shops and good quality charity shops that make the shopping an interesting experience, whilst Tewkesbury is also the point where to major rivers meet – The Severn and The Avon, making it a unique place to visit.

Loving the Christmas Markets!

Last weekend I made the most of the mild weather by visiting not one, but two Christmas Markets. Trip one took in the Lincoln Christmas market, set in and around the beautiful surroundings of Lincoln Castle. I try to go to Lincoln each Christmas, loving the chance to drink mulled wine whilst browsing all the stalls. I particularly like the leather and sheepskin stalls which have a great mixture of bargain buys and more luxurious items. Lincoln City is also a great place to shop, with some brilliant vintage stores, charity shops with hidden treasures, and small independents that are perfect when you are looking for something a little bit different.

My second trip of the weekend was a family affair, taking in the now famous Frankfurt Christmas Market in Birmingham City Centre.  This is truly a foodies paradise, with everything from Ostrich Burgers, enormous bratwurst sausages, Eggnog donuts, and my personal favourite – chocolate covered strawberries and grapes on skewers (amazing!). There are stores dedicated to traditional wooden toys and decorations, including beautiful Nutcracker dolls, and also lots of handicrafts and textiles. With the exquisite carousel and the return of the ferris wheel it is a winter wonderland, and my Christmas isn’t complete without a trip to what is my favourite market of all.
