Fabulous Food from Bun and Bowl

For foodies, Birmingham is becoming a really good place to enjoy delicious food, with lots of new eateries popping up, offering a wide array of cuisines that suit all tastes. One of the most recent to open is Bun and Bowl, which is located in the Iconic building that is ‘The Cube’. Bun and Bowl was launched in May and is a deluxe burger and shrimp restaurant. I was invited to the opening, but due to family commitments I couldn’t make it, so when I was asked if I would like to sample the menu I was really excited. And so, last Friday night, I took the hubby along to sample the delights on offer.

We arrived a little early for our table, before the restaurant had begun to fill up. This gave me the perfect opportunity to take some pictures of the decor. I love the exposed walls and black and white photographs that line them, it gives the place a real retro feel, like a New York Italian restaurant of the 1960s. We were seated at a window table, a great place to indulge in people watching as the world headed out on a beautiful Friday night.

We were introduced to the menu and started the night with drinks. Pete was driving and so stuck to soft drinks, but I chose a Strawberry Mojito, which was gorgeous (and very strong!). The ice was much needed as the night was a hot one, and the mint gave a real refreshing taste.

For the starter I decided to try some of the shrimps. The Shrimp in garlic, lemon and parsley sauce were absolutely delicious. They were really meaty, and the garlic sauce was so tasty that I was glad that it came with a bruschetta that I could use to dip in and soak up the sauce. Pete opted for the grilled Halloumi cheese, which came in large pieces with warmed pitta bread. The Halloumi was soft and creamy, and the pitta bread was a nice accompaniment, perfect for making posh cheese sandwiches! The service was very quick, from ordering our starters we only seemed to wait a few minutes before we were presented with our food.

By the time we had finished our starters the restaurant had filled up, with almost every table taken. I wondered if this would have any influence on the service, but we were asked if we were ready for our main course (a nice touch) and the meals came straight out. For our main course, we had both opted for something from the burger menu. Pete chose The Cube, a 7oz prime burger topped with melted mature cheddar cheese and sweet-cured bacon. The bacon was just the right side of crispy, and the burger was a lovely, juicy patty of beef, very succulent and extremely tasty. These are generous sized burger stacks, so you may want to chop them in half, or eat them with a knife and fork.

The Cube

I chose a chicken burger, the Naughty chicken.This is 7oz chargrilled fillet of chicken breast topped with sweet-cured bacon and garlic sauce. I hate bacon, so asked to have this served without. The garlic sauce was lovely, not at all overpowering, and the chicken was a tasty breast that contrasted so well with the brioche bun it was served in. We chose french fries for our side order. I loved the fact that there was a nod to English tradition with the newspaper style wrapping that the fries were served in.
The fries were perfect, soft in the middle and crispy on the outside.

I can honestly say I was pleasantly full after the main courses were finished, and had enjoyed every single part of the meal. Pete finished with a latte and I (may) have had another naughty Mojito just to finish off though!

I was really impressed by the simplicity of the menu and the tastiness of the dishes. This is surf and turf for the 21st century, with good service and friendly staff. I am truly looking forward to my next visit to Bun and Bowl, and will definitely be trying one of the shrimps in a bowl main dishes on my next visit.

MPW in The Cube – Simply Wonderful!

August has been a pretty special month for Fashion-Mommy. As well as celebrating two years of this blog, I was also celebrating seven years of being married to my long-suffering other half, and the only place I really wanted to celebrate was at MPW in The Cube.

Marco Pierre White’ s Birmingham Steakhouse has been a huge success since it opened at the end of last year, with the most fantastic word of mouth reviews for the food, service and ambiance.  I was lucky enough to attend the launch party earlier this year, where guests were treated to fabulous canapes that hinted at the delights at the menu, so I was determined to make time to sample the full delights of the menu.

With thanks to MPW’s general manager Mark, and to a very lovely friend, Kym Rowlingson, our night began in the best way possible, with a wonderful window table that afforded us the amazing views of the 2nd City from the 25th floor of The Cube.  Birmingham looks very different from such a vantage point, and it was interesting trying to spot different city landmarks. Champagne was presented at our table, a lovely gift from Kym and her hubby, almost bringing a tear to my eyes as I tried to choose from a menu with so many mouth-watering choices.

For the first course I opted for one of my favourite dishes in the world, French Onion Soup. This was perfect. The sweet onions combined with the large Gruyère crouton was so tasty, and yet light, a really great start to the menu. For a main course we both decided on steak (what else?). I chose a fillet, whilst Pete opted for the t-bone. I love béarnaise sauce, so that was something that had to be added to the dish.

The steak was simply sensational. I like my steak medium rare and this was just so tender, the knife simply slipped through it. The accompaniments of chunky chips cooked in beef dripping were also fabulous, crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside – basically – the perfect chip. I also loved the onion rings with a really tasty beer batter.

The relaxed and chilled atmosphere of MPW means there is no pressure to rush through courses, so there was plenty of time for a little break with a glass of champers on the terrace. The glistening lights of the city looked so pretty, and it was just wonderful to get the opportunity to savour that view, whilst thinking of the delights on offer for dessert.

And so for dessert. And you can probably guess that I’m a dessert sort of person. And so I was just spoiled for choice…except that a little earlier I’d seen someone at another table served with a chocolate dream of desert in a martini glass. I’d just known that was the pud for me…and I wasn’t wrong! The chocolate mouse was just sublime. light, fluffy, really chocolately…and with a biscuit surprise at the bottom. Also, the plate had been decorated with Happy anniversary, which was just another really special touch.

Everything about the evening was just perfect, and I must commend our waitress for the evening, who was warm, friendly, funny and a total credit to Marco’s. I would recommend MPW to everyone, the food is amazing, service is great, and the views are just wonderful.

Marco Pierre White and Hotel Indigo launch Party

Birmingham has a new landmark, the glorious skyscraper that is ‘The Cube’ that now soars above the city. And last Thursday saw the launch party for what is set to be The place to eat in Birmingham, Marco Pierre White’s steakhouse bar and grill at Hotel Indigo. MPW is an ultra modern restaurant spanning the 25th floor of The Cube, and Fashion-Mommy was there to check it out.

The launch party had been organised by the Ed James group, and I must admit to being very impressed by the spectacle they had laid on. Marco’s face stared moodily out at guests, emblazoned over the 25 stories of The Cube for all to see. A red carpet welcomed you to Hell, possibly a play on Marco’s famous role as the head of Hell’s Kitchen, and there were devilish fire-eaters and Satyrs there to ensure a red-hot welcome. You then entered the lift to ascend to culinary Heaven, with a priest on hand to take any last-minute confessions.

Once at the top, you realise what a truly stunning experience the MPW restaurant is. Offering 360 degree views over the city, in the glittering night sky Birmingham looked spectacular. I felt slightly Sex in the City-esque as I sipped my Laurent Perrier on the balcony enjoying the very chilly night with Brum standing in for New York. The restaurant  itself is stylishly pared down, with chic black and white decor and twinkling skylights.

As to be expected, Birmingham’s celebs had turned out in force, from the worlds of TV, radio, sport, music and style. Guests included Birmingham legend Jacki Graham (I was so starstruck I wanted to break into ‘Step right up, hurry hurry..), Nick  Ross, Danielle Lloyd, Suzanne Virdee, Nick Ross, Kate Lawler, Steve Bull and Adee Phelen. Musical entertainment was provided by the stunning and super talented string quartet Sirens.

Food, as to be expected was fabulous. I thought it was a great idea to produce small, bitesize versions of dishes from the menu, and the filled Yorkshire puddings were divine! I was also rather partial to the chocolate macaroons which I believe strayed many of the January dieters from the straight and narrow…

There was also a fun  photobooth from Pellier Photobooth’s, who had a range of hilarious wigs and hats that you could use to create a fun souvenir of the night. I opted for a pink wig hoping for a Katy Perry look, but think I resembled something from the Bubble Guppies more…or Frenchie from Grease.

All in all, a fabulous night which provided a great showcase for a new Birmingham, which is now attracting the attention of the New York Times as a top place to visit. Congrats to Ed, Denise and the team for organising such a fab launch, and for inviting Fashion-Mommy to be part of such a great night.
