The Makings of A Murderer 2
If you enjoy reading about, or watching documentaries about true crime in the UK, then you will have heard all about Colin Sutton. Colin is the former head of a Metropolitan Police murder squad, the Senior Investigating Officer who caught serial killer Levi Bellfield and ‘The Night Stalker’ Delroy Grant. The story of these key investigations have been dramatised in an ITV series starring Martin Clunes. This TV series has given Colin Sutton the title Manhunter, and he is now involved in a TV documentary series called ‘The Real Manhunter’. Colin is currently touring in the UK’s top true crime theatre tour, The Makings of a Murderer 2, following on from Scottish detective David Swindle. Last night I went to the Birmingham Town Hall to catch what is a fascinating, often horrifying, insight into what it takes to catch a killer.
This show is a must see if you have any interest in true crime. Colin explains that crime follows two patterns. A manhunt when you know who is responsible for a crime and now need to catch the perpetrator, and a whodunnit when you need to establish who is responsible. The first half was dedicated to two lesser known cases to illustrate both a manhunt, where the identity of the killer was known almost immediately due to doorbell cameras, and a whodunnit, where the killers were an unknown entity. This section was fascinating when you realised that these cases were in the early days of mobile phones and when CCTV footage and ANPR cameras were not readily available to aid investigation. Colin gave an real insight into what has been described as ‘good coppering’.
The second section focused on the two key, notorious cases that have made Colin famous. I have read about both cases and thought I knew all there was to know, but Colin came at these cases from a totally different angle that made the talk riveting, and had me looking forward to new documentaries on each case that will hopefully be released in 2025.
I can’t recommend Colin Sutton’s talks highly enough, they are fascinating and illuminating, delivered brilliantly by the real Manhunter.
