What are STEM Subjects?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. These four subjects can open the door to many career opportunities for your child, because they offer a skill-set that is in high demand by employers. There are also many important life skills to be learnt through STEM subjects, such as critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork and independence.

To highlight the importance of learning STEM subjects at school, The Manor Preparatory School have put together the following information for parents…

Most schools integrate STEM subjects into their curriculum, in order to help young people develop an interest in these key areas as early as possible. It is important for children to understand the connections between each of the STEM subjects, as well as their importance in the real world. For example, STEM continues to play an increasingly important role in developing new technology, crime scene investigation and space exploration.

Parents should encourage their children to explore STEM subjects at home. There are many simple but fascinating STEM learning opportunities available in the world around them. Let them explore nature or teach them about space and the universe. Stimulate their curiosity but setting up some safe experiments at home, or engineering a marble run together. Even cooking can help a child to develop their maths skills by calculating quantities and measurements.

There are many fun and interactive activities you can do at home to explore STEM subjects and the chances are you probably do already without even realising it!

If you would like more information about STEM subjects and how they can benefit your child, there are plenty of resources online. You could also speak to your child’s school. They will be able to give you an overview of the curriculum and offer advice on how to support your child’s learning.
