Met Ball revisited – Good dresses.
The New York Costume Institute’s annual gala is THE fashion event of the year. Wall to Wall with stunning gowns and glamorous make-up, this is the one event that no fashionista wants to miss. This year the ball was a tribute to the late, great Alexander McQueen, with the Savage Beauty exhibition of his fabulous gowns opening at the Met. Of course, this meant a range of beautiful McQueen gowns on show, but many other designers were showcased too, with Stella McCartney having a very busy Met ball. Could this be the year that ethical fashion finally becomes mainstream?
It’s been around for a few years now, but for many, ethical fashion is a bit like the gym – you know it’s a good thing, but you don’t necessarily go there! Images of hippies wearing tie dye and smelling of joss – sticks were so prevalent that fashionistas saw ethical fashion as a thanks – but no thanks moment. No amount of moral feeling was worth that amount of hemp. But things may be changing, and in future years, people may point to February 2011 as the turning point.
