Cinderella Brings Half Term Magic To Birmingham

One of the most magical ballets of them all made a welcome return to Birmingham last night, when Cinderella opened at the Birmingham Hippodrome. The classic story, with choreography by David Bintley and a soaring score by Prokofiev, proved to be the perfect family entertainment for half term as it enchanted the audience, old and young.
The story is totally faithful to the classic, much loved fairy tale, with the cast of characters, the glass coach, the glass slipper and the clock striking at midnight, all in place. The ugly sisters are more spiteful and stupid than ugly, but are also, and this is a huge part of the charm of Cinderella, utterly hilarious. From their truly funny costumes, to the fact that at least one sister is more interested in cake than the handsome Prince, to the brilliantly comic dancing with Major Domo, they are a scene stealing joy. Bravo to the brilliant Rllis Small and Olivia Chang Clarke who excel in the roles.

Rising star Yu Kurihara takes the role of Cinderella, and she is exquisite, able to convey both deep sorrow and joy in her movements and expressions. She has a wonderful chemistry with Lachlan Monaghan as the very handsome prince, he performs with charm that is perfect for the role.

The sets are incredible, almost a character in themselves, and the changes are done smoothly, particularly when the kitchen is transformed with a magic mirror. The transformation scene is beautiful, the frogs and mice just charm and delight all, but particularly the younger members of the audience. It is all just beautiful, but it has to be said that there was an audible, memorable gasp when the loveliest f glass coaches arrives on the stage.
Cinderella is the ultimate fairy tale made real by the talents of the Birmingham Royal Ballet. This is one show not to be missed. It is exquisite.
