Germany: A Football Fans Delight
In recent years, Germany has become a prime destination for fans of football. Many UK football fans are starting to take in European cities that have strong links to football. There, they can enjoy a cultural city break, whilst also enjoying either a stadium tour, or a matchday package, watching one of Europe’s top football teams in action. I did this myself a few years ago when I went to Barcelona to tour the Nou Camp stadium and museum, whilst also enjoying a few days at the beach in Santa Susanna. This year I am turning my attention to one of the European giants when it comes to football, Germany.
The Package
The first thing you need to do is decide on your needs – do you want to organise this trip yourself, or would you prefer a package trip like the ones organised by Visit Football, which offer all inclusive, tailored deals. If you decide to do it yourself, you can easily book your tour or match day tickets online, and can often find cheaper flights if you are able to travel at the weekend. Make sure you have all your documents to hand, as well as unlimited data with an internet SIM card which will also help you if you are booking any further museums or excursions as part of your trip.
You’re now good to go, you just need to decide upon your favoured destination.
Berlin
Berlin is a simple choice of destination. The capital city of Germany, it is also the home of Hertha Berlin, a team I have a personal soft spot for after my own team WBA played them in a pre season friendly a couple of years ago. The Olympiastadion Berlin is Hertha’s home ground and they offer daily stadium tours which can be booked online.
Of course, as you are in Berlin, you are also in a tourist paradise. You can combine your football odyssey with visits to the Brandenburg Gate, check out the modern art scene and enjoy modern landmarks like the gold-colored, swoop-roofed Berliner Philharmonie. The best way to enjoy the city if you are on limited time could be a walking tour.
Munich
Probably the most famous name when it comes to football in Germany is the mighty Bayern Munich, so the cosmopolitan city of Munich is a must visit for those on the football trail. Munich play at the Allianz Arena, and you can get single match day tickets through sites like Viagogo and at the official online ticket shop.
Munich is a glorious city for tourists, particularly those with an interest in beer. It is the home of the world famous Oktoberfest, and has many beer halls which offer the best in Bavarian hospitality and entertainment. It is well worth a visit for football fans, and non football fans alike.
Dortmund
My final destination on my football tour of Germany is Dortmund. Home to Borussia Dortmund, this is a football club with a famous tradition of nurturing young talent, including Jude Bellingham. Borussia Dortmund play at the iconic Signal Iduna Park and offer both highly rated stadium tours and stadium walks for fans to enjoy.
Dortmund is a dream for football fans as it is also the home of the German Football Museum, so this may well be the greatest cities to visit if you are a true football aficionado.
