Cyrille Regis – Working Class Hero Book Signing At Blue Sheep Books
Blue Sheep Books is a cool independent book shop in the Black Country Town of Wednesbury. It stocks a gorgeous range of books, including local interest and authors, a great crime section, and beautiful special editions, as well as hosting reading clubs, Murdle evenings and Pokemon battles. It is, in short, a real destination for Midlands book lovers. Add in the fact it also serves coffee, cakes and craft beers and you have a hidden treasure that is fully deserving of its growing ‘book flock.’
Today Blue Sheep Books hosted a very special book signing for fans of West Bromwich Albion with a visit from Baggies chronicler and club photographer Laurie Rampling. Laurie, a life long fan of WBA, has written a series of books about the club and its most iconic players, many illustrated by his own photographic images taken as club photographer. His current book ‘Cyrille Regis – Working Class Hero’ is an enormous tome dedicated to the great player, who, as part of the ‘Three Degrees’, was not only a trailblazer and hero for the likes of Ian Wright and Dion Dublin, but was also a great, lifelong friend of Laurie himself, the result of a chance meeting at New Street Station in 1978. The book, a huge beautiful tribute to a brilliant player and even better person, is the sort to grace the sportiest coffee table or book case. It is a must read, filled with wonderful sporting moments and memories, and so many glorious photographs of a legend in his prime.
As well as Laurie, Blue Sheep Books also had some very special guests from Albion’s illustrious past. Tony ‘Bomber’ Brown, Ally Robertson, John Wile and Kenny Foggo were all in attendance, happily signing copies of the book and posing for photographs. The quartet, who between them had more than 1700 appearances for West Brom, were happy to chat and share their reminisces on all things football, including the recent Euros and the resignation of Gareth Southgate. Chatting to such WBA legends about football was certainly something I didn’t have on my bingo card for 2024!
This was a really lovely event for a magnificent book, and Blue Sheep Books is such a warm and welcoming place. Pop by, grab a coffee and a cake, choose a new book, and then sit and read in the sunshine. What’s not to love.
