Developing Your Garden This Autumn
Autumn is the perfect time for garden updates. We still have plenty of nice days to enjoy before Winter sets in, and we should be looking at adding some forms of garden heating like a classic fire pit or patio heaters so that you will be able to continue to enjoy your garden as 2024 ends and 2025 begins.
What else should you be looking at doing in your garden during the Autumn months? Step this way to find out.
Look after your garden furniture
Some people actually put their garden furniture away before Winter hits. But, if like me, you still like to sit outside on those cold, crisp days, then you simply need to look at purchasing coverings that can mean the furniture can stay outside and can quickly be ready to be used if you chose to sit outside. In addition, it may be worth purchasing some waterproof seat cushions which can be quickly wiped over so the seats are ready to be used.
Add Some weatherproof garden features
Adding an unusual garden feature can elevate the look of your garden from the ordinary to the extraordinary. One type of feature stones that are currently gaining popularity are Monoliths, that can be just a feature, or can be adapted to be a water feature.
Monoliths and feature stones have been used across the world for thousands of years and their significance ranges from the deeply religious to purely decorative. These days, striking Welsh slate monoliths, holloliths and feature stones are used to make a bold statement in all styles of garden.
Unusual, rustic slate planters and displays can also help to raise the appearance of your garden, and look both classic, and yet ultra modern.
Mulch, Mulch, Mulch
One stage that your Autumn garden must go through in order to make it through to spring, is the mulching stage. The National Trust explains:
Mulch is the name given to a thick, loose layer of material placed on top of bare soil in flower beds or containers.Adding this layer helps to suppress weeds, increase water retention and improve the quality of the soil. It can also neaten the appearance of beds and protect roots from winter frost.
You can use simple garden compost, or wood chippings to ensure your flower beds are sufficiently mulched. You will be thankful for this come Spring.
Plant Some Flowers!
What! That might be what you are saying when you read this, but some flowers need to be planted in Autumn, in order for them to grow in Spring. Bulbs for Spring flowers like tulips and daffodils can be planted in October when the soil is still soft but the temperatures have cooled.
