Jetting off may be the only escape this spring

As the jet stream appears set to pass the UK by yet again, record numbers are being seen at airports throughout the country. Even in the challenging economic climate, the actual UK climate is proving too much for many of us, who are turning dreams of beaches, sun and relaxation into reality.

 There are still good deals to be had, and there are manycheapflights to ever-popular destinations such as the Balearic islands of Menorca, Ibiza and Majorca. The pull of these destinations lies in their island status (more coastline for your money than the mainland) and their stunning scenery. For three little islands in the Mediterranean, they provide pretty much the ideal holiday – whatever you are looking for. Majorca offers everything you may want to do under its hot sun: surf, swim, soak up the rays, hike…Ibiza, while traditionally the clubber’s paradise, also offers peaceful coastline retreats, and Menorca, with evidence of its ancient history, can provide its share of peace and quiet.

 For a cheap break this spring, the Balearic islands are well served by airlines such as Jet2.com, which flies to Menorca, Majorca and Ibiza. And once flights are taken care of, there are plenty of ways to ensure your cash goes further once you are away as well. A great way to see Majorca’s capital, Palma, is on the hop-on-hop-off bus. Open-top so that you don’t miss out on any sunshine, the tour is a good-value and easy way to find your bearings, spot the best tapas bar, and make the most of a little local knowledge.

 As an alternative to Sangria, why not try a tour of the Menorca Xoriguer gin factory, where visitors get to see the distillation process – and of course, taste the unique and distinctive Menorcan gin… There are lots of low-cost activities on the islands, ensuring that the only splashing out you need to do is in the sea.

 Regardless of the island you choose for your break, if you want to venture away from the bars and buzzing towns, you will be destined to find quiet coves, off-the-beaten-track walks, glistening sandy beaches and fishing villages dotted along the shoreline. More inland, the islands offer a peek into their history as well as into their everyday  Mediterranean life: Gothic cathedrals, Stone Age ruins, and acres of land scented by the lemons grown there and which may overlook an almond or olive grove –the food ready to be served to you just nearby.
