Keeping Warm On Winter Fishing Trips
Whilst we are currently sitting shivering in the freezing cold conditions, it is easy to forget that sport and pastimes don’t stop just because the weather isn’t great, we just need to think more carefully about how we stay warm and safe while we are enjoying ourselves. One of the Winter pastimes that is still enjoyed by many on cold, crisp, Winter days is carp fishing, a pastime that can be enjoyed alone, or with friends and family, and one that is ultimately very rewarding.
Carp fishing, is, of course, an activity that takes place outside, so keeping yourself warm is of the upmost importance, particularly as fishing is a sport that can keep you outside, in one place, for hours on end. But there are things you can do to ensure hypothermia doesn’t set in, both in terms of what you wear, and what you do whilst you are fishing.

Warm Clothing
This might seem like stating the obvious, but your need the correct sort of clothing to keep you warm when you are fishing. In fact, you need to remember the two ‘W’s – warm and waterproof. Thermal underwear is a must have, as are thicker thermal socks to be worn under boots. There are such a thing as a thermal romper suit, an all in one designed to be worn as an underlayer, whilst you can add a waterproof all in one, all weather suit, over the top.
You then need to think carefully about covering your head. It is a well known fact that you can lose a lot of heat through your head (around 30%), so some sort of head covering is absolutely essential. A head gaitor is a great idea. This is an all weather hood that completely covers the head, and then also has a covering for the lower part of the face. Sealskinz do an all weather one that is waterproof too which is definitely worth a look.
There are many products that are available that are self heating. These include heated gloves, self heating socks, heated insoles to be worn inside specialised fishing boots, and even heated body warmers are all available, and would all be brilliant on the coldest of days.
Remember layering is the key to keeping warm and keeping as much of the body covered as possible is very, very important for your well being on super cold days.
Hand and Foot Warmers
Hand and foot warmers are small and compact, easy to put into your fishing bag, but these could be absolutely crucial if you find your extremities are starting to chill and numb. Remember, when fishing, there is every chance that your hands, and therefore your gloves, could get wet, so make sure you carry extra pairs just in case.
Keep Hydrated
Just like you would in warmer weather, make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids. Hot tea and coffee is comforting and warming, although you may find yourself needing to use the toilet a little bit more often.
If you follow these tips, you should be able to enjoy your Winter carp fishing.
