Motown The Musical Launches At The Jamhouse
Last week The Jamhouse in Birmingham’s lush St Paul’s Square was the host to the launch of one of the most anticipated shows in the second city this year. I am talking about Motown the Musical, the smash hit story of Berry Gordy and the rise and rise of Motown records and its stable of superstars, The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson.
Motown the Musical comes to the New Alexandra Theatre in October, and is sure to be a smash hit, after wowing audiences on Broadway and in London. The songs are literally the soundtrack of the 21st Century – My Girl, Baby Love, I Want You Back, Dancin In The Street, Signed Sealed Delivered, You Can’t Hurry Love, It Takes Two…need I go on?
The launch brought some perfect Motown sounds to a stunning Summer’s Day, with an introduction to the concept of the musical and its origins from the producer. There was lots of fantastic film footage, both archive film from the 1960s and from backstage and onstage footage from the stage show. But as good as this was, it was the live performances that totally make this show an unmissable event.
First up was The Temptations with the classic My Girl. They were not only note perfect, but had the glorious dance routines that Motown male groups were famous for down to a tee, making it a wonderful, polished performance.
Motown the Musical is the story of Berry Gordy, and his love affair with Diana Ross was a big part of Berry’s story. Their rendition of ‘You’re all I need to get by’ was a spine-tingling, beautiful treat, packed with all the emotion of their love.
And finally, there was a performance from The Supremes, probably the most famous girl group of all time. They sang a medley of their greatest hits. everyone a classic, everyone just gorgeous.
Motown the Musical opens at the New Alexandra Theatre on Tuesday 11th October for a four week run. Tickets are now available, click here to buy.
