Oscars 2016 – Dresses and trends
The most glamorous night on the movie calendar took place last night in Los Angeles, and it didn’t disappoint in terms of jaw dropping dresses. There were show-stopping looks from the likes of Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander (who was apparently channeling Belle from Beauty and the Beast in her yellow Louis Vuitton dress – whether that was true or not she looked incredible), Naomi Watts and Sofia Vergara amongst many more. Yes, Oscar night was back! (Click here to catch up with all the winners.)
Glamorous glitter was well represented by the flawless Saoirse Ronan in green Calvin Klein, very Studio 54 Halston, but kept young and up-t0-date with her soft hairstyle. Margot Robbie was also incredible in a dress that made her as gold and glitzy as the Oscar itself – another lady who was simply perfection. Lady Gaga started her own trend by wearing both a dress and trousers, but this was not as terrible as it might sound, it was a terrific look designed by her good friend Brandon Maxwell, and in white, with her Marilyn hair, she was a total style hit.
But it wasn’t all good news. Kate Winslet went for a fluid Ralph Lauren look that might have been great on the red carpet, but on photographs looks a little like a black bin liner. I actually joked on Twitter that I thought that Jennifer Garner was wearing Kate’s dress, and kind of wish Kate had chose that dress, elegant and much more fitting with her style. I loved Brie Larson’s dress, but when you are expected to win your first Oscar, maybe something that didn’t resemble a dress worn by Sienna Miller last year may be a good idea. (You can see Sienna’s look here.) I was torn by Rooney Mara’s dress, liking the top which was a beautiful lace confection, but finding the bottom just had the look of torn lace curtains.
As ever with the Oscars, some of the most interesting looks came at the after show parties, where Kate Bosworth looked incredible in a dress that was really made for walking that carpet. Liberty Ross wore the dress she had previously worn to her pre-wedding brunch, and Kate Hudson, was, as ever, showing off that perfect body.

I wasn’t ‘wow’d’ by a lot of dresses this year but I did think Julianne Moore looked absolutely stunning in Chanel.
