Romantic Christmas Movies To Enjoy This Year
Christmas is coming, and this means a chance to indulge in all your favourite Christmas movies. I have selected a few of my favourite ones that are perfect to watch on a movie date night, films which leave you feeling warm and fuzzy and full of love.
There are a couple you will definitely know, but also a couple that might have passed you by.
Serendipity
This is a gorgeous little Christmas movie that seems to have passed many people by. Starring the lovely Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack (I know, perfect levels of gorgeousness right there). it is about two people who meet in a department store on Christmas Eve when they both try to buy the same pair of gloves. They spend a lovely day together, but they both have partners, so even though they feel a connection, they have to go their separate ways. But will true love always find a way? It is a lovely, glossy Christmas movie, with a wonderful soundtrack that includes Van Morrison and Annie Lennox. Definitely one to see if you believe in true love and fate.
The Bishops Wife
A black and white 1940s classic with a Christmas theme that also seems to be somewhat forgotten and neglected these days. The Bishops Wife takes place at Christmas, with the Bishop, played by David Niven, suffering from a loss of faith. An angel is sent down to help him regain his faith, but the angel, played by the inimitable Cary Grant, instead begins to fall in love with his lovely wife, played by the beautiful Loretta Young. Think lots of Winter scenes of skating and glorious trees and enjoy three of Hollywood’s finest stars at their best. This might be a lovely movie to watch if you are enjoying over 50s dating at the moment.
White Christmas
A perennial Christmas favourite, but one which seems to have become a little old fashioned in recent years. It needs to be reassessed, if only for the glorious technicolour it which it is filmed which is a real Christmas treat. Four entertainers (Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Vera Ellen and Rosemary Clooney) are booked to perform a show in Vermont, When they arrive they find that their wartime commander has an inn that is failing and they decide to put on a show to save his business. Yes it is cheesy, but it is also the kind of film that leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. (If you are using dating sites in Essex this might be a great date idea as it is showing in selected cinemas, including one in Southend.)
Love Actually
This has become a modern day classic Christmas movie, a tearjerker that can make you both laugh and cry, and shows all sides of love at Christmas. My own personal fave tales in this compendium of love are Colin Firth’s damaged man falling in love again, and Martine McCutcheon and Hugh Grant as the Prime Minister and his cleaner who fall in love. But beware, you will break your heart when Emma Thompson has that stoic stiff upper lip even though she discovers her husband’s affair. (This is another one that is perfect if you have been using an Essex dating site and have found love as there is a brilliant Christmas showing of Love Actually in concert – now how romantic is that!)
