Christmas Party Beauty Sorted With Blow

Blow Ltd has been called the Uber of the beauty world, able to deliver fabulous hair, nails and beauty makeovers in the comfort of your own home, simply by using a downloadable app. But now, just in time for Christmas, a Blow Ltd salon has opened in Debenhams in the Bullring, Birmingham, ready to perform those express miracles for all your Christmas party needs. I went along last week to check out the blow dry service, and couldn;t believe the transformation that was achieved.

The new salon is large and bright, with stations for hair, beauty and nails. Blow Ltd offers a menu of services, with a range of different blow dries and updo’s for the hair, manicure and pedicures for the nails and make up looks that range from a healthy daytime golden look, to an after dark cocktail hour makeover. In addition, it also has a quick fix menu for eyes, mini mani’s and braids.

I opted for Starlet waves, an old style Hollywood hair makeover in the style of Veronica Lake and other 1940s goddesses. The beauty of Blow is that it really is designed for the modern woman who may have just a short period of time to get their hair/nails done etc before moving onto the next task. So blow dries can be done on dry hair, but there is also the option to have your hair washed beforehand if you wish.

I had washed my hair that morning and was on a strict time frame due to another event that day but was pleased that my hair was totally transformed in 25 minutes. And when I say transformed, I mean transformed. My usually poker straight locks was a mass of film starlet curls in the style of Marilyn Monroe, it was totally unrecognisable from when I went into the salon. The 25 minute no wash blow dry costs £25, which makes it an affordable treat if you have a special night out planned.

Reviewed – Izza Pizza In Selfridges Birmingham

The best pizza I ever had was in Sardinia. A small, unassuming looking pizzeria created pizzas to order, which were then eaten in the square in the Old Town in Alghero, overlooking the harbour with the sun shining. The locals all flocked there (always a good sign) and the square was filled with extended families all enjoying the early evening sunshine and the delicious sourdough pizzas, stone baked in traditional ovens. I remembered those delicious pizzas well on Sunday, when I went along to Izza Pizza, the newest food outlet in Selfridges in Birmingham, and part of the Lasan Group who are dedicated to creating good food in many different types of cuisine. Izza Pizza creates delicious Italian style street food with fast and efficient service.

We were greeted in a friendly manner and allowed to chose our table. We started by ordering soft drinks and I was recommended a new addition to the menu, a fresh and traditional style lemonade which is not yet on the menu. It was delicious – traditional lemonades can be too sharp and zesty but this had mint and was just sweet enough to avoid those ‘faces’ (you know exactly what I mean.). Hubby enjoyed a selection of olives whilst we perused the menu, I’m not a fan but he assured me they were delicious.

Izza Pizza has a great children’s offering of a six inch Margherita Pizza and Ice Cream for just £5.50. If your little one is brave you can add additional toppings, but the Margherita itself is lovely, with lots of stringy cheese and tomato. From the adults menu I opted for one of the Izza 12 inch remixes, the Tease and Onion(£8.95), whilst Pete, ever a classicist, went for Quattro Stagioni (£10.50). We also ordered sides, two portions of seasoned wedges (£3.50) and a garlic flatbread (also £3.50). We opted for all the food to come out together rather than as a starter and mains.

You can see the pizzas being prepared, and the eye catching golden oven ensures lovely scents are adding to the general temptation of Pizza. The food was very quick to arrive, which was impressive, but if I’m to be honest, it could’ve done with being a tad warmer. That said, the portions were good and hearty, and the flavours rich and tasty. My pizza was very flavoursome, due in no small part to the addition of goats cheese, whilst the Quattro Stagioni was just filled with topping. The sourdough base was excellent, and made it perfect for eating the Italian way – that is ripped and then rolled so you lose non of the toppiings.

The sides, in particular the wedges were excellent. I’m not generally a fan of wedges, often finding them greasy, but these were crisp and tasty, with fluffy potato in the middle, and the creamy chive mayo dip was the perfect accompaniment. The flatbread was frankly amazing, dripping with garlic butter and of a generous portion size too.

I really enjoyed the pizza and frankly couldn’t finish it, it was so generous with the topping that I was full well before finishing. In hindsight, you could share a pizza and sides and that would make a great lunch option. With the friendly and efficient service that is offered, and the added delight of being able to people watch in Selfridges, I would definitely recommend giving Izza Pizza a try very soon.

Your Five – fashion and beauty at Bullring

Your Five is a special fashion and beauty showcase and preview organised by the Bullring shopping centre twice yearly. The idea is a personalised, one to one appointment where you are able to talk about the key trends for the season, and are shown a range of pieces that fit the trend and are available from Bullring stores. The items chosen scan a range of budgets and stores, with Ted Baker, Oasis, New Look, Reiss and Miss Selfridge all represented this time around.  You can choose your favourites from each catagory and they are photographed and then sent to your email address, with stockist details and prices so that you can always shop for them at a later date.

I was feeling very ropey this weekend, suffering from a cold and streaming eyes, but I made my way to look at the key season trends that Bullring had selected. With Winter clearly in mind, coats were a big talking point, and I loved so many of those selected, with beautiful wool coats in soft shades from both Reiss and Ted Baker, but my favourite was the Crombie style coat in animal print from New Look – definitely added to my shopping list. Ankle boots were the shoe focus, with metallics being very popular, but I was more drawn to the coloured suede versions from Clarks and New Look.

The trouser trend is moving away from skinny fits and into stylish wide leg styles that evoke the 1930s and 1970s. I loved the Topshop bottle green cropped versions that I think would look stunning worn Jane Fonda ‘Klute’ style, with a skinny polo neck and knee high boots. The skirt selection was also just stunning, with pleats, net, tulle, leather and metallics all available in beautiful abundance. I love that so many of the skirts are knee and midi length, and just loved the elegance of the full skirted variety.

As well as fashion, Your 5 also looks at beauty, with a focus on a red lip. This is something I tend not to wear as I never think red suits me – as much as I love it. However, I was really pleased with the colour chosen for me, red with a more coral tint from Chanel (148 I think) and it certainly made me look again at my aversion to lip pencil and red lips.
