Celebrity sandal style with Brantano

The opportunity to wear sandals for every single occasion is definitely one of my favourite things about Summer. There are just so many gorgeous styles out there, and after a Winter, and Spring of being bundled up in thick socks and boots, my feet totally appreciate the feeling of freedom that wearing sandals brings.

When it comes to sandals, my feet are firmly planted in the flat camp. I do have a pair of 70s style Clarks wedges which I love with a passion, but, in general, I live in flats – Havaianas, Ipanema and pretty jeweled styles that can be teamed with a dress or jumpsuit for an evening out. I never pack any heels for my Summer holidays, often finding resorts full of uneven. cobbled pavements which are frankly a graveyard for vertiginous heels, so I just pack glittery sandals and give my feet a break.

This Summer Brantano has a great range of women’s sandals that cover all the bases, and are most certainly giving celebrity Summer style more than a passing glance. With famous brand names like Hush Puppies and Clarks, and styles that range from true Carrie Bradshaw style heels, to retro cork wedges, beautiful jeweled sandals, gladiator flats and Ipanema flip flops that are now as familiar with cargo trousers or maxi dresses as they are with a bikini, Brantano have clearly taken their sandal duties very seriously. There is a pair for every occasion, and a style for every taste.

What is your favourite choice of sandal – do you prefer a heel, or does Summertime mean the heels take a break as you opt for the flats?

Return of the 90s slip dress

When I was a teenager, there was one wardrobe item that was essential for a Saturday night out. I’m talking about the slip dress, that tiny piece of fabric with spaghetti style straps and a look that was distinctly more negligee than frock. I wore a pink short version the first time I met my husband, and used to actually buy vintage nighties to wear as dresses, sometimes grunge style with a t-shirt underneath, other times more glamorous with lots of faux pearls or diamante. Kate Moss was queen of the slip dress, and there was no-one cooler than Kate in the 90s.

And although they’ve never really gone away completely, at the moment they are definitely back with a bang. Last week, the exquisite Rosie Huntington Whiteley was photographed looking amazing in a soft baby pink slip dress, teamed with sleek Robert Palmer style hair and pink faux fur. This was following on from Sienna Miller, Amanda Seyfried and, who else, Kate Moss, who have all returned to this 1990 classic style.

There are many ways to get the look. You can trawl charity shops and jumble sales for vintage nighties and camisole tops. If you are brave, you could try actual underwear as outerwear, with chemises from Boux Avenue and long silk night gowns doubling as dresses. Or, if you prefer your dress to have a little more substance and a little less wisp, the High Street has plenty of gorgeous styles – just add some strappy sandals for the ultimate sex kitten look.

The Little black dress makes a triumphant return at Cannes

The Cannes festival continues and I continue to be blown away by the beauty of many of the looks on display. Forget the excessive amounts of flesh that we seem to be bombarded with lately, the likes of Emma Stone, Sienna Miller, Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts and Lupita Nyong’u have decided to show us what a movie star really looks like, rather than opting for Cher’s Bob Mackie cast-offs. It is both a breathe of fresh air, and a visual treat. Glamour at its best in a beautiful setting.

One thing I have noticed is that classic, glamorous black gowns seem to be making a Cannes comeback. Yes, there have still been stunning looks that feature glitter and vibrant colour, but there have also been stunning black dresses that have both harked back to the golden age of Hollywood, and have been utterly modern in both style and sophistication (I’m thinking Miranda Kerr in David Koma). There have been wonderful and memorable Cannes looks that have featured black dresses, including looks worn by Cheryl Cole, Cara Delevingne and Blake Lively, but this year there seem to be a lot more of them, and I for one love this.

My personal favourite so far is the always elegant Naomi Watts in a strapless lace and tulle gown from Ralph Lauren. I think this is one of Naomi’s most beautiful red carpet looks ever.

I’m looking forward to seeing more fabulous red carpet looks from La Croissette as the festival progresses.
