The yellow peril – colour of the season?

Baba recently learnt the names of all his colour. When asked his favourite he says, with absolutely no hesitation whatsoever, “YELLOW”.  This is perhaps not that strange, as yellow is my favourite too, and this season, it seems to be having a bit of a moment.

When I think of yellow, I think of some of my favourite ever dresses.  I wore a gorgeous cotton sundress in canary yellow whilst I was four months pregnant to walk around Barcelona in the sunshine, it seemed the perfect choice. I had a favourite pair of ASOS sky-high Mary Janes in patent mustard that I was wearing when I fell out of hubbys car – breaking 2 bones in my foot in the process. Yellow is always in my wardrobe – from the cute Suzy Smith messenger bag my best friend gave to me one birthday, to the large yellow Topshop glass beads that re-emerge every Summer. I simply love yellow!

Some of the most stylish celebrities have also embraced the sunshine colour. Two of the most memorable Oscar dresses were in shades of yellow. Renee Zellweger had her most memorable vintage moment in a Jean Desses dress from Lily et Cie, whilst Michelle Williams wore s beautiful mustard Vera Wang dress with a slash of red lipstick  when she was nominated for her role in ‘Brokeback Mountain’. This look was replicated at the 2011 Golden Globes when Kyra Sedgwick wore a very similar styled Pucci dress.

Other fabulous, famous golden-yellow gowns have been worn by the likes of Kate Moss, who’s vintage lemon dress is one of her most iconic looks, so much so that she replicated it for her first Topshop collection. Victoria Beckham included an amazing mustard/gold gown in her own dress collection.

More recently, there has been an absolute explosion of all shades of yellow. The red carpet has seen Annette Benning in a lemony shade at the Critics Choice awards, whilst Rosamund Pike wore a deeper shade of Alexander McQueen yellow print to the Baftas. Diane Kruger wore a romantic lemon shade in her own usual, impeccable style, whilst Rihanna wore a dramatic black and yellow Dior Couture gown whilst performing at the Grammy Awards. Jessica Alba showed yellow can be teamed with most colours when she wore a beautiful yellow/bronze sequined dress to the Mui Mui store opening in London. For those who feel that yellow clothing are too much, Miucci Prada, Michelle Obama and Charlotte Dellal showed that yellow is the perfect accessory to lift any look. Miucci wore cute plastic banana earrings at the Prada S/S show in September, whilst Michelle Obama wore mustard shade heels with a H &M dress. Charlotte Dellal, the women behind Charlotte Olympia, carried her own design banana clutch bag to the Mui Mui store opening in London.

So why is yellow so popular. Well, after the harsh winter we have suffered – maybe you take your sunshine where you can get it. Yellow can brighten the spirits, but also looks great with most hair colours and skin tones. It seems there is a shade to suit everyone. And, as both the High Street and designer sections are awash with the colour, it would be churlish not to embrace the yellow peril.
