Wallis 1923 Dress Collection – The Little Cream dress

Each season, Wallis dig into their rich archive to come up with the 1923 collection. This is a collection that re-images and re-masters old designs in order to bring something to the fore that has a vintage feel whilst being totally new.

This season, the 1923 collection returns with a tribute to the Little Cream Dress. This is a beautiful range of dresses that feature beading and embellishment to create dresses that bow to quite a few different eras. There are Art Deco style curved rainbows that echo The Great Gatsby trend, albeit showing far more leg than even that racy era would allow. The Cream sequin shift dress is pure 1960s in style and shape, whilst the Lattice Shoulder dress is a throwback to the 1980s and needs to be teamed with bare legs and stiletto heels for a look straight out of ‘The Business’.

But if cream is not your thing, you will probably fall in love with the silver sequin dress. Halston inspired, with all the detail at the back – a draped back and bow to catch the eye. This is a dream of a dress that would also be fabulous come festival season – add some leggings and wellies for that Kate Moss disheveled glamorous look.

Wallis lookbook – Minimalist elegance

I was very excited to be invited to a preview of the upcoming Autumn/Winter collection for High Street favourite Wallis. Wallis is always a brand I look forward to seeing, and in recent years that have produced some excellent collections that have been full of classic design, but with a twist. Now attracting a younger audience, as well as the young at heart, Wallis has become a must visit destination on the High Street.

For the new season, there is a decidedly minimalistic look that uses a sparse palette of black and white, but with shocking flashes of red to add a touch of spice. Taking a whole host of icons, from Bianca Jagger wearing Le Smoking, to Carrie Ann Moss in the Matrix, and then adding flashes of Angelina Jolie and Charlotte Rampling in The Night Porter, this is a strong collection that is a return to pared back elegance after a summer of pastel and print.

The red pieces are also the standout pieces for me. The stunning red full length dress is so chic, and would be a perfect choice for Kate Middleton – it has a touch of Roland Mouret style to it. The 1950s style coat, from the 1923 archive collection, could also be inspired by Kate’s love of coat dresses, the full skirted 1950s silhouette is just so elegant.

Another stand out piece is the winter white coat with the fur collar that is a real Snow Queen piece. This is another piece from the 1923 collection that is based on Wallis Archive pieces. I love this piece – it is just so timeless, and would look as great over jeans as it would over an evening dress.

Wallis 1923 collection – beautiful retro styles.

After the  gorgeous 1950s printed Summer dresses, Wallis are again raiding their vast archives to bring vintage chic to the High Street. This time they have looked to two very different eras in terms of style, the 1920s and the 1960s. I absolutely adore the 1920s collection which just screams GLAMOUR.

The 1920s era encapsulates decadent vintage glamour. Wallis has taken inspiration from the Jazz Age for its 1920s evening dress collection. This has been inspired by sketches recovered from the Wallis archives and also by  the Speakeasy bars evoked in Boardwalk Empire.  The gold boardwalk dress evokes the glamour of the period with its rouching, bead work detailing and drop waist hem line, 1920s fan Kate Moss would love this dress! Other favourites include the pink or black tassel dresses with delicate art deco inspired beading and bow neck tie and the grey or pink  firework embellished tunic dresses. The look is completed with the cocoon drop waist coat in cream or black accessorised with a faux fur stole.  These styles are going to continue to be a big story into 2012 with the release of ‘The Great Gatsby’, so invest in the  trend now.
