Why Debt Is No Longer Something To Be Embarrassed About

Debt. There can’t be a person out there who hasn’t, at one time or another, suffered from some form of Debt. Whether it be from student loans yet to be paid off, credit cards bills that have mounted up, overspending at Christmas, of for special occasions like weddings, or just struggling to be able to balance the books at the end of the month, debt is something that we all experience, and is also something that is relative – what may be a drop in the ocean for one person, can be an enormous worry for another. The good news today, however, is that debt is no longer something we have to suffer in silence and never mention, it is no longer a taboo subject.

The treatment of debt in television and film is proof of this. Who could ever forget Eastenders those famous episodes in the 1980’s when Arthur Fowler, a stalwart of Albert Square, stole money from the Christmas club in order to pay debts, and then descended into a breakdown that culminated in a suicide attempt at Christmas. It was powerful television, Arthur didn’t feel he there was anyway out of his situation, and the taboo around debt meant he shared his increasing problems with no-one. The truth was, there were a lot of Arthur Fowler’s about.

Today, the taboo around debts and borrowing are much less, it is certainly easier to not only be able to talk about your debt, but to be able to seek help and advice too, everything from money saving tips from the likes of Moneyplus Advice, to finding financial help from a range of high street banks. This attitude towards debt has been mirrored in TV and film portrayals of people with money issues, no longer are the stories just about the likes of downtrodden Arthur Fowler, the very glamorous persona of Carrie Bradshaw, with a New York lifestyle and a wardrobe to die for, can also be a victim of very real debt too.

When Sarah Jessica Parker, in the guise of Carrie, made that very famous statement of liking her money where she can see it, in her closet, she actually perfectly encapsulated a very real issue of modern life, that is, living for today and not really thinking about tomorrow. Carrie, saying aloud, what many of us also think, was a timely reminder that debt needs to be faced up to, it wont go away by itself, and that there are people out there who can help.

If you are facing any form of debt, it is worth seeking advice from your bank, from sites like Moneyplus Advice, and to make sure you are not trying to face it alone. There is no stigma in saying you need help.
