Stylish Films: Wicked Little Letters
On Monday, I took a trip to the cinema to see ‘Wicked Little Letters,’ This tells the frankly incredible story of a spate of rather rude, poison pen letters that were sent, initially to one woman, Edith Swan, but later to many other people, in the quite seaside town of Littlehampton in the 1920’s. Edith’s neighbour Rose Gooding, an Irish immigrant who ‘was no better than she should be’ was blamed, and actually jailed for the letters, but the real culprit was later revealed through the clever detective work of ‘woman PC’ Gladys Moss, with the unravelling of the case proving to be a even more shocking tale than even…

Stylish Films: Maestro
We are now in the middle of film awards season, and one film which has received lots of nominations has been the Leonard Bernstein biopic ‘Maestro‘. Directed by the multi talented actor Bradley Cooper, who also plays the lead, Maestro is Leonard’s story, mainly focusing on his relationship with equally talented wife Felicia Montealegre. There’s was a true love story of two like minds, but was plagued by Bernstein’s numerous love affairs with men that he carried out all through the marriage. Felicia knew of, and tolerated these for many years, but ultimately they lead to the breakdown of their relationship, although they remained married until her early death from…

Stylish Films: Ferrari
Even if you have zero interest in motor racing, Ferrari is a pretty special film. A true story, it is set in 1957, a watershed year in the life of Enzo Ferrari, with his namesake company is on the verge of bankruptcy, and Enzo living a double life, in the form of marital hell with his wife estranged wife Laura, with both grieving the loss of their son a year previously. He also has a long term lover Lina Lardi, and a 10 year old son, an open secret known to everyone except Laura. To try to save his company and restore the prestige of the name Ferrari, he gambles…

Stylish Films: Witness For The Prosecution (1957)
Christmas is always a time to rediscover Agatha Christie, and this festive season, a whole range of film adaptations were shown, including the one that Agatha loved best of all, the 1957 adaptation of an original short story, ‘Witness for the Prosecution’. This was a brilliant adaptation, with a very starry cast, and Agatha absolutely loved it, which was certainly not always the case for film adaptations of her books (she hated the Margaret Rutherford Miss Marple’s for instance.) Witness for the Prosecution has been adapted many times since this film, most recently as a stage play that has wowed audiences in London, but, for me, this version is certainly…

Stylish Films: A Haunting In Venice
Last weekend, Kenneth Branagh returned with his latest Agatha Christie adaptation. A Haunting in Venice is based (very loosely it must be said) on Agatha’s ‘Halloween Party’, one of her lesser known books, , and the reviews are showing that this adaptation may well be his best yet. Branagh is definitely growing into the role of Poirot with each outing, and this thriller has supernatural elements that make it more of a chiller, a real treat as those Autumn nights draw in. Loyal fans of Agatha will recognise elements of the original Halloween Party, including key character names like Joyce Reynolds and Rowena Drake. The action does take place at…
