1960s style lust – Karen Gillan in We’ll take Manahattan
Last night saw the screening of the much-anticipated BBC4 drama ‘We’ll Take Manhattan’. This was the story of the photo shoot that shot 60s model Jean Shrimpton, aka ‘The Shrimp’ to fame, and changed the nature of fashion photography as we now it. The photographer who created this iconic work was of course David Bailey. Shrimpton and Bailey naturally fell in love and became one of the most iconic couples of all time. Maybe it was because she was a woman, but Eve Arnold never felt the need to over sexualise Marilyn Monroe like some of the studio photographers did. In her photographs, many taken on the set of The Misfits, Marilyn is an earthy presence, beautiful and natural, a captivating woman with undeniable vulnerability. I first became a fan of Eve’s work in my late teens.
