It is most definitely the biggest night on the Red Carpet circuit as far as Hollywood is concerned, but last night a lot of the big hitters were missing from the 2020 Academy Awards. No Jennifer Lopez, no Jennifer Lawrence. No Gwyneth Paltrow. No Angelina Jolie. No Cate Blanchett.
The good news is that there were still enough stylish stars at the Oscars to make the carpet an interesting, glamorous place, and in this post I am showing you some of my personal favourites.
Let me know whose looks you loved.
Best Actress winner Renee opted for Armani Prive for her big night, and looked impeccable, it was a very elegant look that let the dress talk for itself. The look reminded me of a dress worn by Princess Diana in 1983, a similar one sleeved, column dress, and Renee was definitely one of the best dressed on the night.
This one will definitely divide people, but I love the puff sleeves, the ruffles, the sequins, the all round over the top ness of this look. It was simultaneously very now, and yet harked back to 1930s Letty Lynton, and just shouted movie star.
This was one of my favourites on the night, a real catwalk dress that totally transferred to the red carpet. I love that again it is very now, with the pink net and the necktie, but also a real Hollywood statement dress. The dress was by Valentino, and was a work of beauty.
Margot Robbie is definitely a star I always look out for on the red carpet, and this year, in vintage Chanel, I was not disappointed. Her look was very dramatic, with the red lips and the peekaboo hair a la Veronica Lake, and the dress was elevated by the jewelled brooch effect.
Another star that is always interesting to watch on the red carpet is Janelle Monae, On this occasion, Janelle avoided her usual black and white palette and went for a gunmetal shade in a dress that was part Tinman, part Jedi and totally amazing. Ralph Lauren was the designer of this masterpiece.
Natalie is always perfection, but when you wear a cape that has the names of female directors ignored by the Oscars embroidered on its edge, then you just have to bow down to her statement. The dress itself was a stunning black and gold customised Dior gown that was beautiful and very different from everything else worn on this particular carpet.
Another old style movie star dress that was just perfection. Regina King has been really slaying on red carpets over the last few years, and this fairy tale style dress was another winner, one which totally fitted her like a glove. I saw her Versace dress described as classically beautiful and have to agree.
