Stylish Television – Dancing on the Edge

The most exquisitely clothed drama of the moment must be ‘Dancing on the Edge’, Stephen Poliakoff’s absorbing story of the rise of a Jazz Band in the London of the 1930s. Featuring royalty, millionaires, ‘it girls’ and a whole host of beautiful people, and set in the glorious Art Deco surrounding of ‘The Imperial’, Dancing on the Edge is super stylish as only a series set in the midst of the bias cut world of the 1930s can be.

The Louis Lester band find success, due in no small part to the allure of the bands female singers, Carla (played by Wumni Mosaku), and in the lead vocalist role, Jessie played by Angel Coulby. These girls wear the sort of dresses that I would frankly kill to be able to wear, shimmering sequined sheaths in gold and silver for the lithe Jessie, curve hugging velvet and satin for the voluptuous Carla. They look so awe-inspiring in these gowns, utterly burning up the small screen every time they appear.

But it is not just the songstresses whose style had me drooling. Rich girl Pamela and photographer Sarah also appear in stunning look after stunning look.  In particular, the scene where Pamela, played by Joanne Vanderham, dances with the Prince of Wales features a glorious gown of the most fluid gold silk, with Grecian draping detail that makes the ‘It Girl’ look like a veritable goddess.

The 1930s is often forgotten as a fashion decade, in between the strong flapper style of the 1920s and the Utility wartime styles and then the ‘New Look’ of the 1940s. But it is one of the most infinitely stylish decades, with feminine, body skimming evening gowns in acres of silk, midi length tea gowns in china florals and wide leg trousers teamed with floaty pussycat bow necked blouses. Dancing on the Edge is embracing all those trends with such love, making it a fashion experience not to be missed.
