BAFTAS – My Best Dressed

I have to say that this years BAFTA awards was one of the most enjoyable in years. Stephen Fry was on great form presenting, and the Hollywood contigent was almost in full attendance, making this a super glamorous and starry eyed occasion. It was also one of the best dressed award evenings I have ever watched, with just so many fantastic looks, ranging from super elegant to super sexy.

I’ve decided to focus on my favourite dresses from this years ceremony, so there are no places for Anne Hathaway (fine, but a tad dull in Burberry), Andrea Riseborough and Marion Cotillard (who wore the same, gorgeous shade of yellow in equally disappointing dresses from Vivienne Westwood and Dior respectively). But let’s not dwell on those dresses – let’s look at who really did make the grade.

Jessica Chastain was my best dressed of the evening in a totally amazing gown from Roland Mouret. I could look at this for the rest of my life and still not be able to find a single fault with it. The perfect colour for a red head, the exquisite cut – Jessica was Rita Hayworth incarnate in this dress.

Jennifer Lawrence was true to form in wearing Dior, but this time I loved the look. A very soft pink, embellished with black stones and studs, this gown was perfect for her slim frame, and also seemed age appropriate after some seriously aging gowns. Her hair, was another story. It looked a tad greasy, or wet. An updo would’ve been so much more elegant with this look.

Helen McCrory opted for the most exquisite vintage gown from William’s vintage, a 1963 ice blue, crushed satin confection from Givenchy that looked as if it could’ve previously belonged to Grace Kelly – it was that pretty. This is Helen’s second red carpet triumph in a week and I’m beginning to look out for her choices.

BAFTA rising star winner Juno Temple showed that sometimes simple is best in her chic Stella McCartney dress. I loved her retro waved hair and soft make-up. The only jarring point was the beaded bag, which was a tad too big to be paired with this outfit.

It was a great night for Nicholas Oakwell, who dressed Helen Mirren and Paloma Faith, amongst others. I loved Paloma in this very 1940s styled dress. The beading was exquisite, the slash only hinting at skin, and then she teamed this with a dramatically styled Betty Grable-esque updo. It may not be for everyone, but I think Paloma is amazing and hope she continues to pull off such arresting looks.

Helena Bonham Carter often gets a bad press and hits the worst dressed list, but on this occasion she looked wonderful. Her vinyage style tulle dress was one of her best looks ever, still allowing her quirky personality to shine through. I posted this particular look on Facebook and it seemed most people agreed that Helena looked divine.
