Golden Globes Great Gowns

Awards season started properly last night with the Golden Globes, which saw all the beautiful people out in force on the red carpet. The Golden Globes is always a seriously glamorous night, second only to the Oscars in terms of importance and star power, so, as to be expected, there were some seriously glamorous looks to be seen on the red carpet, with some colour and texture trends pointing the way to what we may see at the Oscars and Bafta’s.

It has to be said, there were some underwhelming looks. I hated the 1970s bridesmaid dress worn by the usually wonderful Kiera Knightley (I’m blaming pregnancy hormones for that one.), whilst Lena Dunham did her usual trick of picking a great colour, but a bad dress. I was really disappointed with Rosamund Pike’s Vera Wang dress, which seemed to want to let everything hang out, whilst I think that Amy Adams needs a much stronger colour to really stand out on the red carpet.

But there were also looks to love and swoon over. Jessica Chastain channelled Marilyn and Rita Hayworth in Versace, whilst my favourite yellow was a triumph, especially when teamed with green a la Leslie Mann. I also adored the metallic silver trend, most noticeably when worn by rising star Dakota Johnson, and award winner Julianne Moore.

Did you have a favourite dress from the night?

Style icons 2014 – A tale of two Jessica’s

Continuing with my look at the ladies whose wardrobes I would’ve happily fell into in 2014 I turn my attention to two ladies who share the same first name, as well as the same, impeccable, ladylike sense of style.

Jessica Chastain has had a stellar year in fashion in 2014. As well as being one of the best actresses of her generation, she is also a lady I always look out for on the red carpet, interested to see how she sets off that porcelain skin and Rita Hayworth hair. She makes both fabulous and interesting choices, from shimmering royal blue metallics that are the perfect choice for a redhead, to citrus yellows and lemons that make her totally stand out on the red carpet.

Jessica often opts for a shorter, 1950s style skirt which keeps her look fresh in a sea of full-length red carpet choices, and her hair and make-up are always appropriate – she can transform from girl next door to a glamorous siren with just a slash of lipstick and Kohl, but I love that she often opts for soft and dewy make-up looks that give that barely there look.

For a wonderful variety of looks and styles I think Jessica Chastain’s wardrobe is hard to beat, but another Jessica, the gorgeous Jessica Alba, certainly gives her a run for her money.

jessica-chastain-290Jessica Alba never looks anything less than a movie style, whether on, or off duty. She could certainly win the title fashion Chameleon, as she changes her style on a regular basis that goes from Prom Queen Pretty to full length princess, and then to sexy and sizzling. A regular on best dressed lists, Jessica has been someone who looks I always seem to love – she makes a regular appearance on the fashion-mommy facebook page with so many of her red carpet dresses, but this is a lady not afraid to rock a jumpsuit too.

Cannes – The festival of great Summer daytime looks

I have always been a little obsessed with the Cannes film festival. It epitomises sheer glamour and elegance in the most beautiful of settings. The roll call of the most beautiful, most talented, most famous and sometimes the most infamous have all walked that famous red carpet, publicising everything from films to L’Oreal beauty.  I went to Cannes myself in 2008, when I was pregnant with Joe, and must admit I fell in love with the aura of glitz and glamour of the place.

Memories from my trip to  Cannes

This year’s festival has been one of the most stylish and glamorous in recent memory, with Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, Blake Lively, Marion Cotillard, Cheryl Cole and Jessica Chastain just some of the stunning stars who have captivated with a series of exquisite gowns. But Cannes is not just known for the spectacular evening gowns. Mid Day photo calls mean there are also some pretty terrific daytime looks to enjoy and influence our Summer wardrobes. Theses are looks that we can adapt to suit our style, much more than the Givenchy and Armani evening dresses that we can all but dream of ever wearing.

With Cannes now over for another year, I have selected some of my favourite daytime looks from what is always a sartorial dream. Grace of Monaco stars Nicole and Paz Vega take my ultimate daytime awards for their timeless and elegant looks, but a special mention must also go to Jessica Chastain, who shows that black can be a perfect look on a sunshine day. I have also included Sofia Coppola. Her look was actually from the red carpet, but the midi length makes it perfect for a special occasion held in daytime hours.
