Golden Globes 2017 – Best Dressed

Last night saw the start of Awards Season in Hollywood, with the awarding of the annual Golden Globe Awards which honour the best in film and television from the previous year. As always. the Golden Globes are all about the fashion, as well as being a pointer to who might win big at The Oscars next month.

I have to say that from a fashion point of view, the awards were a little disappointing. I was unimpressed with the likes of Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldana, both reliable fashionista’s who failed to shine on the night. I also thought that this was a show that missed real fashion moments that usually come from the likes of Cate Blanchett, Angelina Jolie, Naomi Watts, JLo and Gwyneth Paltrow  – non of these ladies were in attendance.

Even amongst the dresses we did see, I was disappointed in general. I loved the colour and design of Jessica Chastain’s dress, but wished it wasn’t quite so ‘booby’ – a little more fabric would’ve totally nailed old Hollywood styling. I really liked SJP paying tribute to Carrie Fisher with her Leia-esque hair, and the dress was stunning, but I can’t think it would’ve been even more beautiful without the sleeves.  I’m still torn by Sienna Miller’s dress – was it cool and understated, or a little too ‘beachy and underdone?’ Best Actress Emma Stone looked beautiful in a sea of stars, but it was a little underwhelming if I’m honest.

So what did I love? Well, my favourite colour is yellow so I was loving the looks from Viola Davis, Maisie Williams and Reese Witherspoon. Special mention must go to the beautiful Natalie Portman, nominated for playing Jackie Kennedy and totally channeling that Camelot, White House style. Mandy Moore and Kristen Bell both wore black, plunging dresses with aplomb, they were just super stunning and hair and make-up was perfect.

Art Deco is my era of choice, so I love Drew Barrymore in her unusual white and silver dress. Naomie Harris flew the flag for Britain in a slinky metallic column dress, whilst there were princess moments for young stars Hailee Steinfeld and Lily Collins.

Golden Globes – looks and trends 2016

Last night saw the first red carpet proper of awards season, when the Golden Globes took place. This post is dedicated to the trends of the night, which saw deep, plunging cleavage being one of the key looks on the night, as Halston style necklines reigned supreme.

Best dressed on the night for me was the exquisite JLo, who moved away from the nude, barely there dresses of last season, to full on, vintage style Hollywood glamour, in a dress she described as ‘mustardy’. It was a beautiful look by Giambattista Valli and made JLo stand out from the all the flesh on display. America Ferreira went for a dress in a similar shade, but I was not so keen on this look due to the high neckline.

Other looks that I loved on the night included the enchanting Saoirse Ronan, who was fresh and pretty in Yves Saint Laurent couture and Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton. Amy Adams delighted me by opting for orange Versace that was sassy and sexy. I loved Olivia Wilde in steaming hot Michael Kors, 70s influenced and perfect, although I think she needed to have a word with hubby Jason Sudukis, who just looked an idiot in trainers on the red carpet.

There were some looks that didn’t work for me. Rooney Mara has a perfect face and her make up was impeccable, but the dress looked like she’d had a run in with a dog on the way out the door. Eva Longoria, usually so glam and sexbomb, was wearing what can only be described as Amish chic, with the double bows and flowers on the hips just looking garish and managing to make Eva look frumpy. Kate Hudson flashed the flesh in Michael Kors, and  yes, the abs are perfect, for frankly, I’m sick of seeing them, and wish she could do something else. Cate Blanchett will split opinions, but I think she looked like Constance Bennett from the 1930s in her Givenchy gown, simply elegant and beautiful.

Ultimately, I think Golden Globes 2016 will be remembered as the one where a lot of the female guests took the event title super seriously and got their Golden Globes out. The biggest trend of 2016? Probably tit tape if this is anything to go by.

What was your favourite look from last night?

Early Awards Season Sensational looks

Forget all my proclamations about hating January.  I mean, yes, I hate the post- Christmas malaise, the cold weather, no Christmas decorations, the lack of money and all round depressive nature of the month, but I had totally forgot about award season, which, for someone who would like to spend every day in a ballgown, more diamonds than Harry Winston and Jimmy Choo glitter sandals, is by far the best time of the year.

The Golden Globes will take place on Sunday night, which kickstarts the frocks and the glamour of award season, but there have already been lots of smaller events taking place this week, which have been the perfect showcase for some truly gorgeous looks. The likes of Helen Mirren, Jessica Chastain, Brie Larson and the wonderful Cate Blanchett have already been setting the benchmark high with some really beautiful looks, that run a gamut from 1940s style elegance (Cate) to channeling Sharon Stone’s iconic 1990s mix and match styles, when she took a gap turtle neck and a long skirt and totally stole awards season (I’m thinking Helen is very much in that vibe in that stunning blue at Palm Springs.)

My favourite looks so far are Cate and Brie Larson, an Oscar contender who looks just beautiful in jade green, especially when teamed with simple hair and copper peep toe heels.

Do you have a favourite look so far? Will you be watching the Live from the Red Carpet on the E! Channel this Sunday?
