Stylish Television: Only Murders In The Building

First of all, I am happy enough to admit I am a bit late to the ‘Only Murders in the Building‘ party, as I think we are now into series 3 of the Disney+ show. But I always believe in the mantra ‘better late than ever’ and have spent this week binge watching on series 1 and have to say I am totally hooked. This may just be my favourite series, a cross between an Agatha Christie novel and Murder She Wrote, funny, clever and twisty in equal parts. Add in the incredible cast of leads, the brilliant supporting roles, and an hilarious cameo from Sting and you have my fave watch of the Summer.

The three protagonists of the series are Steve Martin as Charles-Haden Savage, a former actor who was the star of a popular 1990s crime drama, Brazzos, Martin Short as as Oliver Putnam, a struggling Broadway Director, and Selina Gomez as the mysterious Mabel Mora, a young artist who is living alone in her aunt’s flat in the Arconia Apartment building. The three mismatched characters bond over a love of crime podcasts after they are evacuated from their building and end up in the same coffee shop. On returning to the building, they discover that the evacuation was due to the suicide of a man that they had all previously shared a lift with, Tim Kono, a man who had previous links to Mabel during her teen years. The unlikely trio set out to solve what they believe to be a murder, unearthing some very unlikely suspects along the way.

There is so much to love about ‘Only Murders’. The leads are brilliant, with the enigmatic Mabel, as played by Selina Gomez, being a stand out. It is often laugh out loud hilarious, particularly due to the supporting characters, with Jayne Houdyshell as Bunny Folger, Michael Cyril Creighton as Howard Morris and Jane Lynch as Sazz Pataki, Charles’ stunt double all just perfectly hilarious in what is, a perfect cast. The story jumps from past to present, so it is never boring, and the fact that different facts are revealed from different character perspectives make it never less than riviting.

I’m now dying to start season 2, which I believe has new cast members, and investigates a new murder that occurred, once again in the building, right at the end of season 1. It seems that my perfect Summer viewing is now sorted.
