The 2014 BAFTA’s – Key Looks

The days when the BAFTA’s were an also-ran awards ceremony have long since gone. These days the stars turn out in force for the British Academy awards ceremony, and this means a feast for the fashion lovers eye.

This year saw a Hollywood who’s who roll call walking the red carpet. Brad and Angelina, Cate Blanchett, Amy Adams, Leonardo Di Caprio, Lupita Nyong’o, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Uma Thurman and Maggie Gyllenhall all turned out to add a glittering presence. Add in British stars like Naomie Harris, Samantha Barks and Helen Mirren, and the night was guaranteed to have sartorial looks on display that would have set tongues wagging.

Here are some of the key looks from the night. My personal faves were Lupita Nyong’o (again, but I’m making absolutely no apologies for this – she looked flawless in Emerald green Dior) and Samantha Barks, who opted for a simple, elegant column dress that was just so chic, albeit a little long.

Cate Blanchett opted for Alexander McQueen. It was a nice dress, but I have to admit to being a little underwhelmed with this. However, I loved her speech, which was a touching tribute to Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and I did then wonder if the sombre dress was a tribute too.

There was a part of me that thought that the matchy-matchy tuxedo look was a bit like the Beckham’s in the bad old days, but this is Angelina Jolie, and with her sex appeal, this just looked super sexy, especially with that louche untied Dickie bow.

Joely’s dress wasn’t to all taste, but the 1973 Bob Mackie dress (which I can so picture 1970s Cher wearing) was one that I loved. Amazing colour and, with the sunburst pattern, it also reminded me of an Art Deco piece.

One word – perfection.

I wasn’t actually sure of this dress from the photographs. It seemed a little stiff, a little schoolmarm-ish. But this is one of those dresses that you need to see from all angles, because when Amy stepped onto that stage, showing the sexy back zips in all their glory – then I fell in love with this look.

Peacocks new collection – Girl Meets Boy

Now we’ve waved goodbye to the Christmas day for another year, many of us will be thinking of the New Year’s collections. It is always great when we start to see something new and exciting hitting the rails, a mixture of new shades and trends. An email from Peacocks hit the inbox this morning that gave me a peek  at their new season collection, entitled Girl meets Boy.

This is a collection filled with extremes, from androgynous shirts to pretty skater style dresses. A smattering of animal print, and a must have waterfall draped jacket makes this a great capsule collection for you to admire and add to your wardrobe. These are pieces you could start to wear now, then fully utilise come Spring…and now we’ve had the shortest day remember it won’t be that long until the sun starts to shine.

Hot from The Look Show runway – Next’s new looks.

Next was one of the main stars of The Look runway show that was held in the new Stratford Westfield shopping centre at the end of November. They focused on three key themes for Autumn/Winter party looks, which encapsulated a range of styles, from the sexy chic of a little black dress, to the androgyny of a smart tuxedo. And there was the ultimate goddess maxi dress that could take you from the coolness of Autumn evenings to the depths of the Christmas party season with ease. So, take a look at these key styles and tell me – which girl are you?

Look 1

The Next take on the little black dress. This is perfect for girls who look to the 1960s for style inspiration. Stretchy knit and chiffon make this both comfortable and stylish.  Love the idea of this with black opaque tights and platform shoes for a minimal take on evening style. This dress is cool enough to speak for itself.

Who would wear it? Alexa Chung, Alice Dellal, Diana Vickers.

The colour block maxi dress is a real beauty. Grecian in style, with the flattering pleats and the halter style neckline, this dress is one that will cover a range of occasions. I love the vibrancy of the colours, which, like so many things this year, have a 70s feel to them. My  personal favourite is the blue, and this is definitely the dress I would opt for. Think girlie girls like Jessica Alba, Emma Stone and Nicole Richie.

Look 3

The white jersey tuxedo jacket is a real androgynous piece, but one that can be styled ultra feminine. You  could add leather trousers and a vest or camisole to make this a sexy masculine style. But you could also take Olivia Palermo’s lead and use the tux as a cover-up for an elegant evening dress to get that effect of throwing  George Clooney’s tux over your bare shoulders. Whatever you choose, this would be one cool and useful addition to your winter evening wardrobe. Girls who would definitely try this boyish look include Janelle Monae, Chloe Sevigny and Olivia Palermo – of course!
