Getting #OnYourEBike

When it comes to really enjoyable form of exercise, cycling has to be right up there in terms of fun, enjoyment and fitness. Riding a bike is something that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from tots to teens, from those in the prime of life to those enjoying their golden years.  Cycling has seen a real growth in popularity in recent years, partially due to the success of British Cyclists at the last two Olympic games, and there are some stunning cycle paths and routes around the country to be enjoyed, particularly in Staffordshire where I live. Getting on your bike is a great way to get outside in the fresh air to enjoy the beautiful countryside, whilst getting fit in the process and even if you can’t afford a brand new bike, there are lots cheap bike bargains to be found out there.

But what if you love cycling, but it no longer loves you? There is no doubt that cycling is great for fitness, but it can also be physically grueling too, especially if you suffer with issues that affect your mobility, this could be something like bad knees or weak ankles, or a more long term condition like Arthritis. For many people facing these sorts of issues, riding a bike has been a pastime that has been abandoned. But this no longer needs to be the case – if you can’t ride a normal bike, you can try an E Bike.

Fenetic Wellbeing are a mobility company who want to ensure that disability shouldn’t be a barrier to being fit. They look to provide mobility products that address individual needs and their most recent innovation is the E Bike.  They have launched a fab campaign to get us all #onyourebikes.

Fenetic explains how the E Bike works:

An electric bike is an ordinary bicycle with the addition of a battery and electric motor to help with propulsion. E-bikes are perfect for those who love the outdoor lifestyle but suffer with physical restrictions such as bad knees or arthritis. The PAS (Pedal Assist System) of an electric bike means you only need to apply a small amount of pressure to the pedals to get moving. The electric motor will step in and do the hard work for you!

Obviously an E Bike is a fantastic fitness option for those with mobility issues, but they are also brilliant for any rider. They allow you to cycle further distances which your stamina may not allow in normal circumstances, and are great if you have just started riding and are just building up your fitness levels. If you ride purely for pleasure, this sort of bike takes a lot of the hard work out of your travels. If your passion is mountain biking, there is even an E Bike that is suitable for mountain terrain. Many E Bikes are foldable, and are therefore portable – you can stash it in your boot to take it on holiday.

Winter Safety on Two Wheels

This week we have been plunged into some seriously wintry weather, with some parts of the country having the first snow of the Winter, and temperatures making it feel decidedly bleak and cheerless. Mornings are now frosty, and this is all leading to our already busy roads turning treacherous, as the surfaces become slippy and the stopping distances increase. For those using the roads extra vigilance is needed, and non so more so than those who are traveling on two wheels, the cyclists and the motorcyclists.

Even though they only account for 1% of road users, motorcyclists account for 21% of all road deaths, with high numbers also suffering from personal injury. Cyclists are 17x more likely to be killed in a road accident than someone traveling by car. Winter makes using these forms of transport even more dangerous, as poor visibility, slippy road surfaces and inclement weather all leading to a rise in accidents. Unfortunately I have personal knowledge of this fact. A close family friend was very recently involved in an hit and run accident when riding his bike. He has suffered two broken legs and other injuries, with his bike completely destroyed in an accident that could so easily have cost him his life. The driver has, luckily, been apprehended thanks to the vigilance of other drivers on the road that day. They witnessed the accident and followed the driver, phoning the police who were able to arrest the driver. But the road to recovery is a long and slow one for my friend, and this story is all too common, happening every single day on Britain’s roads.

With Road Safety week due to take place week commencing 21st November, now seems an apt time to share a very useful infographic put together by Jefferies Solicitors, which gives all sorts of useful hints and tips on how you can keep yourself safe and sound if you are riding a motorbike or cycle this Winter. Looking at areas such as lights, maintenance and protective clothing, the infographic offers sound advice that may just save a life this Winter.


The sun is shining – get on your bike

Now that Summer is almost here, and the weather is being kind to us, I think it is the perfect time to get out in the sunshine and get on your bike. I am a huge fan of cycling as a form of exercise, and love the fact that it is a perfect activity for all the family to get involved in, regardless of age. It is also a great way to check out the countryside, or some of the great cycling routes and trails that are all around the country.

I tend to get involved in a cycling event of some form each year. In 2012 I was part of the Sky Bike ride, and interviewed Stacey Solomon who was the face of the event. Last year I was a guest blogger for the amazing 7-in-7 Cycling event which saw cyclists ride from Zurich to Birmingham, crossing seven countries in seven days and raising an amazing amount of money for charities. This year I am collaborating with trailer experts Indespension, who have been compiling a comprehensive list of some of the best mountain bike centres in the country. Luckily, one of them is right on my doorstep in beautiful Cannock Chase. The Cannock Chase Mountain Bike Centre has lots of levels of difficulty in terms of the trails, these included really easy ones for beginners, leading right up to extreme courses for real bike aficionado’s.
