Harvey Nichols hosts a secret fashion show

A secret destination for a very special show

Last Wednesday saw a very special, clandestine fashion show held in Birmingham. Harvey Nichols, based in Birmingham’s Mailbox, is known for bringing style and panache to their shows. The A/W 2013/4 show was a large and lavish affair, with more than 600 attendees. But current renovation work at the Mailbox necessitated a rethink, and the Harvey Nicks team did not disappoint. Moving on from the grand spectacle of last year, we were treated to an intimate affair that was quite literally the hottest ticket in town. Top secret, there were no tweets or posts until the very day, and 600 guests were replaced by a guest list of just 120 – consisting of celebrities, valued customers, and a few invited bloggers. The venue was also a secret, with guests literally being escorted to the surprise venue, a disused building on John Bright Street that had a cool industrial New York air, especially with the soft lighting and neon signs.

And, of course, there was the clothes…

Birmingham Harvey Nichols is one of the smaller boutique stores in the HN family at present, but is able to offer the full Harvey Nichols collection. This full collection was what the audience lapped up, with the cream of the fashion world on display.  Peter Pilotto, Dries Van Noten, Mary Katrantzou, Victoria Beckham, Markus Lupfer, Thakoon, Roksanda Ilincic, Proenza Schouler and JW Anderson – it was like a roll call of all that is fresh and vibrant in fashion in the 21st Century. Add in classic pieces from Givenchy, Diane Von Furstenberg and Roland Mouret, and you have one seriously hot show.

Here are just a few of the key looks.

The setting.

Of course, following on from the fashion, there was an after show party, this started with more Champagne and goody bags back at the Mailbox store, and then an after- after show party at Malmaison. Unfortunately, being a school night, I didn’t do the second party, but did enjoy a little tipple and chat with my fave bloggers back at the store.

A night of Beauty at Harvey Nichols

Last week, Harvey Nichols in Birmingham was the scene of an old school beauty event, with all manner of skin and cosmetic treatments on the timetable. Beauty School dropout had a lessons in cosmetics from Benefit, Skincare from Space NK, and combined this with a tuck shop, a dress up box, and a real lesson in art from the super talented Milly Jackson. It was quite a night!

DSCN6295The beauty lessons were informative and interesting, with the team from Benefit giving lots of advice including the importance of wearing primer under your make-up, and great tips on how to apply liquid eyeliner. (One great idea was to practice with pencil eye-liner first, to achieve the steadier hand – this is much easier to wipe off if you make a mistake). Space NK were giving out spot prizes for swots with good answers and gave a great lesson in the use of BB Creams.

The talented fashion artist Milly Jackson was doing pencil and sharpie sketches on the night – her skill was totally amazing. Here is the sketch she did for me, possibly the worst sitter in the world as my head was constantly on the turn!

No school event would be complete without refreshments. A super cute tuck shop filled with sweet treats was very popular – who could resist fizzy colour bottles and white mice. Drinks were served in school milk bottles – very school-like, except for the fact that these contained Chambord and Vodka (which is a definite yes – even on a school night – ahem!)

DSCN6302DSCN6303With discount offers on most departments, makeovers and hair styling and demonstrations, and the chance to win a prize with every purchase by spinning the ‘Wheel of Beauty’, this was a fun-filled night for the ladies. I’m certainly looking forward to the next time ‘schools out’ at Harvey Nichols.

Gorgeous products available from the Harvey Nichols Birmingham Beauty section.

The fab demonstrations from Benefit made this a popular selection.

With huge thanks to Lisa Piddington for the invitation.

If you live near Birmingham, and beauty is your thing, then the ‘HARVEY NICHOLS – BEAUTY SCHOOL DROP OUT’ event is most definitely something you will be interested in.  This promises to be an evening that is both fun and informative,  celebrating all that is beautiful about beauty!

Harvey Nichols Birmingham is hosting its first Beauty School Drop Out next Wednesday (March 12th) at it’s Mailbox home, and this will feature a range of classes, games and demonstrations.  There will be sweet treats to enjoy, as well as a glass of bubbly as you learn about the season’s trends, tricks of the trade and the what’s hot and what’s not when it comes to cosmetics and beauty.

You will also get the chance to ‘get creative’ in the “Art Department” (I am so dying to know what this entails…any ideas…?)  and there will be the chance to win exclusive beauty prizes when you take part in playground games. All sounds like great, frothy fun doesn’t it. The evening runs from 6pm-9pm and tickets cost £10 (redeemable on Beauty and Perfumery purchases on the night). Tickets are available in store or for more information please call 0121 616 6008.
