Creating a dream living room

It often seems that when it comes to creating dream spaces in our homes, we concentrate on certain rooms, and then neglect others. I am certainly guilty of this. I often think what my perfect bedroom/boudoir would be like, or dream of a kitchen perfect for a Michelin star chef, and yet, when it comes to a living room, I feel distinctly uninspired.

Yet this certainly shouldn’t be the case. The living room is probably the room in the house where we spend the most time. It is the place we relax in, spend our evenings watching television, cuddle up to the hubby on the sofa for movie night, or enjoy a good book and a cuppa on a stormy day. It should reflect our needs, our tastes and our personalities, and yet it can often feel bland and unloved. This shouldn’t be the case, as modern living room furniture can be anything from vintage inspired to avant garde. So, in honour of the room that has the most time spent in it, but often the least amount of love cherished on it, I have created my dream living room, a real loved space.

I think every living room should have a focal point, for me this would be a seriously stylish sofa. I love the Vintage styling of the Sofa below, which would suit a room of any size. The legs are just such a lovely touch, they make this a really grown up sofa, definitely perfect for creating a haven.

Once you’ve chose your focal point for the room, you can then choose furniture and accessories to compliment this. I believe certain things are crucial to create a lovely living space – a pretty mirror, a bookshelf, pictures, photographs and candles. These mix personal touches with practical elements, which should help to create that perfect space for you and your family. But you also need to look at the fixtures and fittings of your living room. Skirting boards and architrive are features that help to set the tone of your room and show whether you are going for a modern or period look. You are also no longer restricted to just white when choosing things like skirting board, natural wood and neutral colours are also popular choices.

Interior Options – Roof Lanterns

One of the key things that makes our homes more attractive is the use of light. The most beautiful rooms are ones where the natural light just floods in, making them feel warm and inviting, bright and lovely. In particular, rooms which are an extension to our current living space, or conservatories or orangeries, are often used almost to bring our gardens and outdoor spaces into our homes. In these cases we want them to bring the light, or the evening sky and stars into our homes. These are the times when a roof lantern is the perfect option.

Roof lanterns can pretty much be added to any room that has a flat roof. They are a perfect way to bring natural light into your room, and are much bigger than traditional skylights. They are also more stylish, as rather than flat designs they can resemble pyramids of glass that direct the light to the centre of the room. There are both UPVC and Aluminum Roof lanterns options, and the designs are elegant in appearance, but surprisingly durable and hard wearing, more than able to deal with any of the extremes of weather that we have in the UK.

I love the idea of one of these purveyors of light being used in a bedroom, where you could rest your head under a blanket of twinkling stars.  Used above a living room, and you could find your heating and lighting bills reduced as the natural light does its own job of keeping you warm, dry and illuminated. As a beautiful design feature for the home, a roof lantern is hard to beat as both a talking point, and, in these times when it is getting harder to move house, this is something which could turn your happy home into your very own dream house.

Would you consider a roof lantern? Do you have a room this could work for?

Be Inspired by Your Walls

When it comes to homes and interiors, every so often a company comes along that has a product that truly inspires awe and admiration. This can be in terms of furniture design – amazing fitted kitchens, beautiful bathrooms or even related to soft furnishings. But the latest company that has had me saying ‘WOW’ is more concerned with your backdrop than with your furniture.

Your Walls‘ is concerned with…wait for it… your walls. So often these days the walls are left as a blank canvas, a plain back drop for our furniture and trinkets. But ‘Your Walls’ want to give you something spectacular as a statement wall, something that will totally take the attention of everyone who enters the room. The company is all about personalised wallpaper, high quality, bespoke and special to you. You can turn a favourite photograph into a mural that can cover any size wall. There are also a bank of ready chosen images that are categorized under different rooms of the house, so if you are unsure what you are looking for, you can browse these for inspiration.

I love the idea of these wall coverings, they make any room interesting, and can be a bright, fascinating canvas for more neutral furnishings, rather than the other way around. Once your covering has been created, you will be given full fitting instructions so you can apply this in your home.  You can also request a sample pack of wallpaper finishes so you can decide which finish you prefer for your wall covering.

Another great aspect of this company is that it works with photographers, illustrators and artists who are looking to put their work in a public domain and maybe make some royalties for it too.  You can become a contributor by applying on the website.

Your Walls murals and wall coverings are an exciting way to put your personal stamp on your own home decor, whether it be through a family photograph, an image of a favourite space or place, or a New York vista that you long to visit. Truly unique to you, they are the mark of originality.
