Olivia Palermo – Key picks for Coast

The Fashion Weeks have come and gone, and, once more, the lady who’s style we’ve all been admiring has been Olivia Palermo. When you ask that age old question ‘Does she ever get it wrong’, the answer always seems to be no when it comes to Olivia’s wardrobe. She is a style icon who understand the importance of style over fashion,  working with classic pieces and creating her own trends that look effortless, but actually take a lot of work. It is actually a lot of effort to look effortless.

This fashion season Olivia has gone for clean lines, with midi skirts, knee high boots and simple knit jumpers being a key look. It was Olivia who started the trend for the mid length pleated skirt from Whistles a few years ago, and she stays faithful to this length and look. It suits her lithe figure and looks so elegant, barely flashing any flesh and yet keeping all eyes in the room on her.

Olivia’s fashion week style

If you love Olivia’s style, then you’re in look. This season, once again, Olivia has collaborated with Coast to curate a special collection of pieces that look like they could’ve come from the wardrobe of the lady herself. This means we have crisp white shirts, wide legged, 1930s style trousers and, of course, a mid length skirt. The pieces have a touch of the fashion forward, like the Spanish influenced Faye cold shoulder top, but, in general, they are wardrobe pleasing classics that you will be able to wear and wear, over and over again.

Autumn Trend – Plise and Pleats

When you take a look at the key Autumn trends for 2016, pleats and plise seem to just jump out at you – they are everywhere! From fluid style 70s metallics and crinkling, to more elegant chiffon styles that could also work for day wear, the two ‘p’s are something well worth adding to your wardrobe.

The pleated skirts are just divine. They made a return a few years ago when both Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo were spotted wearing them, and a particular design by Whistles became the ultimate in cult buys. Since then they have been a steady part of each season’s looks, varying in length and fabric, but there, in some shape or form all the same. My own wardrobe is just full of them, and, as they were a mainstay during the 1970s, I often look for vintage versions in charity shops – my most recent was a M&S St Michael label that cost a grand total of 50p. But for those who don’t like the idea of someone wearing their clothes before they do, I would suggest a trip to Topshop – they currently have a brilliant range in super juicy colours and metallic options.

Plise is another throwback to the 1970s, this time to the disco era of Studio 54, Bianca Jagger and Jerry Hall. I also think this slinky, tiny pleated fabric is the nearest us mortals will get to a Fortuny pleat, and it is an ultra glamorous look that really lends itself well to evening wear, hence making it perfect for Christmas party season. New Look, Topshop and Miss Selfridge all have some great plise pieces this season, making it very easy to do modern vintage styling.

Here are my key picks, along with some inspiration from the celebs.

Olivia Palermo is the face of Coast

It is a match made in fashion heaven. Coast, the home of elegant, glamorous pieces for every occasion, has announced that the effortlessly stylish Olivia Palermo is the face of their Autumn/Winter collection for 2016. Olivia has used her impeccable taste to handpick her key pieces from the new ranges, and then has styled them into a capsule wardrobe that will basically make your Autumn/Winter dressing a complete success.

The collection is full of muted tones, classic shapes and has the elegant, graceful look that you expect of Olivia Palermo. It feels like the sort of pieces she would pick out of her wardrobe, throw them together with a nonchelance that leaves everyone else looking overdressed and fussy. I once met a Sara Byworth, a  good friend of Olivia’s at a fashion event, and she told me that Olivia rarely uses a stylist, she really does have that innate ability to always look amazing and get it right. I think this makes her a perfect choice for Coast, whose pieces I covet every single season since they moved away from just being about occasion wear and formal dressing.

Olivia herself says: – ” “Coast definitely brings something unique to the high street: they believe that dressing up is fun and I can certainly relate to this, teaming up with them for the Autumn Winter collection was a really enjoyable experience.”

I love this collection, the classic looks and understated feel seems to have been inspired by French fashionista’s like Emmanuelle Alt, Carinne Roitfeld and Clemence Poesy. Some of the pieces are not in store yet, but will be making an appearance as September draws on, and I’m guessing there will be waiting lists for the gorgeous Nastazia and Rhea Mono Coats, which are destined to be style classics.
