The Carrie Diaries – It’s nearly time for the new Carrie

The trailer for the series has been previewed, and January 14th will see ‘The Carrie Diaries’ previewing on US television. This much-anticipated series, telling of the teen years of Carrie Bradshaw, stars Annasophia Robb as the teenage heroine, and also stars British actress, the fabulous Frema Agyeman as an ultra glamorous fashion editor, Larissa, responsible to introducing Carrie to High Fashion.

I must admit to loving the new trailer, with its Adam and the Ants theme tune, and with an appearance from the gorgeous Adam himself. There is a really frothy feel to this, sort of Clueless with little elements of Sex and the City peeping through. It all looks so bright and bubbly and fresh, although possibly a bit young for those who remember Sex and the City from the beginning, and have moved onto Lena Dunham and ‘Girls’ in the interim period. The clothes, however, look great – 1980s styles as we now re-imagine them.

As a huge Sex in the City fan, I’m really hoping that this series isn’t a huge disappointment, or a flop. It really is lovely to have Carrie back, even if she seems to have grown a little younger…

The Carrie Diaries – The first look

When Anna Sophia Robb was crowned as the new Carrie Bradshaw, we wondered how she would fit the role. After all, SJP left some pretty impressive Manolo’s to fill.  But with the first publicity shot released, and with a host of other images from on set also leaked to the press, it seems all our fears have been allayed. Because Anna Sophia Robb is most definitely a recognisable young Carrie.

With a headful of corkscrew curls, a sequined prom dress teamed eclectically with a colour clashing cardigan and gorgeous red stilettos, we are being treated to the clashing style of Carrie Bradshaw at her best. There are lovely nods to the iconic series, the tulle underskirt is definitely reminiscent of Carrie’s tutu worn in the opening credits, whilst the stripy belt shows this is a young Carrie, not yet the fully formed heroine who kept us enthralled for six series.

I do wonder how close the film is going to be to Candace Bushnell’s novel. In the book Carrie is a cash strapped teen who customises her clothing, including the handbag featured on the front cover. The customised handbag is definitely there, the rest of the clothing looks more designer than thrift store.  And whilst I am loving the super chic outfit with the pussybow tie blouse and city shorts, it is a very modern look, rather than the Madonna-esque 1980s look revealed in Sex and the City 2 movie. The red and black dotted dress has a more 80s feel, reminding me of short-lived duo Strawberry Switchblade who were usually seen drowning in a sea of polka dots. And that rather large blazer gives the impression that even young Carrie had a Mr Big figure in her life…

Anna Sophia has also shown a rather chic style in her off camera moments too.  I love this beatnik styled striped jumper and skinny jeans that made me think of Kate Moss’s classic styling.

Anna Sophia Robb is the new Carrie!

We’ve been hearing a lot about the Sex In The City prequel ‘The Carrie Diaries’ for some time now, with speculation rife about who would step into Sarah Jessica Parker’s gym shoes in order to play the young Carrie Bradshaw. It seemed that the front runner was Blake Lively, but I was never happy about that choice. The lithe Blake was too beautiful, too sexy and too self assured to play a feisty, but naive young Carrie, and I voiced my concern in a past post. Carrie Bradshaw is, after all, a modern icon, and so the person chosen needed to be able to live up to our image of her. Blake Lively, fabulous as Serena, could never be Carrie.

But now the long wait is over, and the new Carrie has been revealed. Step forward relatively unknown 18 year old AnnaSofia Robb. AnnaSofia is probably best known for her role as Violet in ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, and I think she could be perfect as Carrie. She is the right age to be the teenaged Carrie, and she looks the part, pretty and cute rather than sophisticated beautiful.

She is also showing some serious potential as a style icon. Pretty prom dresses, aztec printed mini dresses from High Street brands like All Saints and simple denim and leather could truly be the wardrobe of a young Carrie. And with her tumbling blonde waves and perfect teeth, you feel like the Carrie baton may just have been past into good hands.

With Carrie now in place, we can get excited about how might be cast as Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte. Who would you choice be?
