Fashion and Frolics in Birmingham to raise funds for the Meningitis Trust.

Stand by fashionista’s, I have a date for your diary. Friday 19th August sees a very special fashion show in Birmingham to raise much-needed funds for the Meningitis trust. This promises to be a very special night in the heart of the city.

The fashion show is going to feature clothes supplied by two very special sources. Ruffles of Kenilworth sells chic designer names like Day Birger et Mikkelson, French Connection, Hoss Intropia, and the Duchess of Cambridge‘s new fave, Malene Birger. The clean designer lines of Ruffles will be contrasted with the cool retro clothing provided by Love Vintage of Leamington Spa.  This is a vintage store that specialises in 60s,70s and 80s clothing and accessories.

Kate makes the Vanity Fair best dressed list.

The annual Vanity Fair best dressed list has been  published, and our own style duchess has made this years list. The Duchess of Cambridge sits alongside Michelle Obama, Carla Sarkozy Bruni and Princess Charlene of Monaco on this years list, and is praised for her “whirlwind year of fashion successes”. But some detractors are already saying she shouldn’t be on the list, with one Twitter comment saying ‘Kate Middleton makes best-dressed list – why? So here are the reasons I think it is absolutely right that she should be there.

1. Everything she wears turns into fashion gold. From the Reiss dress she wore to meet Michelle Obama, that crashed their website and is now selling on Ebay from £600 upwards, to the Burberry mackintosh that sparked a Burberry frenzy, everything that Kate wears has instant sell out written all over it. Even of people can’t get the real thing, the copies will prove to be just as popular, as Peacocks and Tesco found when they launched their sell out versions of the Issa engagement dress.

2. She’s bringing back ladylike elegance. Kate always looks immaculately groomed, wearing elegant dresses, nude heels and carrying neat and dainty hand and clutch bags. She’s not quite got us wearing white gloves yet, but nude panty-hose has definitely made a re-appearance. It seems we relish this grown-up look after the barely dressed antics of Gaga and Rihanna, it makes a change to dress like a lady.

3. Recycle, recycle. recycle. Kate has made it cool to dig deep into your wardrobe and wear clothing you thought you’d never wear again. From family weddings to Royal tours,  Kate will recycle outfits by adding a different hat, or wearing her beautiful hair in a different style. In the recession hit UK – this is striking the right chord.

4. She makes the High Street not only acceptable, but desirable. Zara, Whistles,LK Bennett, Reiss, Hobbs, Kurt Geiger – all these stores have benefitted from the Kate effect. Kate doesn’t keep these brands for her off-duty looks, she will wear them for important royal occasions too.

5. That dress. Kate could be top of that list for the beautiful Sarah Burton dress alone. The royal wedding dress is already iconic, an exquisite creation that was a feat of design. Kate was pitch perfect on the day, and was universally applauded for her choice of dress.  Enough to stick her to the top of any list.

And if all this wasn’t wnough, just look how cute she looked with William in Holyrood,in their matching outfits. Simply adorable!

Christina Hendricks brings more good news for Curvy girls.

As regular readers of Fashion-Mommy know, I just adore Christina Hendricks. To me, she is just the most beautiful women on TV, with a curvy hourglass figure to die for. But Christina doesn’t always get it right in the fashion stakes. On Mad Men, Janie Bryant styles her character Joan as a regular bombshell, in curve enhancing suits and dresses, but  in real life, the thoroughly modern Christina struggles to dress for Hollywood occasions due to designers just not catering for her sort of figure.

Recently,  Christina was photographed on a beach in a black one-piece swimsuit, which sent the press and blogosphere into heated  debates about her body – is it beautiful, or just fat, screamed the columnists, with thousands of comments posted for each opinion.  On the Hollywood life website, a picture of Christina was posted next to a photograph that had been posted on Twitter by the ultra slim Leanne Rimes, with the question, “Who’s hotter in a swimsuit? Christina Hendricks spillout curves or LeAnn Rimes’ ultra lean limbs?”  Voters overwhelmingly voted for  Hendricks by an overwhelming 82 percent.

But, that picture aside, it seems that Christina admits that dressing for a day at the beach is not easy when you have ample curves. She is quoted as saying about swimsuits ‘It’s really hard if you’ve got breasts. You either get smooshed down or there’s no support.’ So is it any wonder that Christina has decided to  launch her own range of swimsuits? After struggling to find something to enhance those famous curves, Christina has decided to have a go herself.

I really understand where she’s coming from. For curvy girls, the beach and pool is the easiest route into a landmine of embarrassment. Costumes can be too tight and almost flatten your mammories to the extent that they balance on your stomach. Or you can get the overhang where they pop out the side of your tankini/bikini top. Tankini’s ride up and leave bellies exposed, totally the opposite of what we bought a tankini for. It almost makes you want to grab a kaftan.

So I  am really glad that Christina is going to attempt to design a swimsuit for curvy girls. At least she understands what it actually means to be curvy, and hopefully will come up with something that enhances fuller figures. In the meantime, Evans has some really flattering swimsuits that will look fabulous by the pool or on the beach this summer.
