Travel Focus – Wonderful Singapore

Continuing with my travel series of wonderful places to visit I am turning my attention to Singapore, the jewel in Malaysia’s crown. Singapore is one of the best places I have visited, with gleaming pavements, a ban on chewing gum, and old colonial style buildings carefully meshing into an ultra modern city. Whether you want to enjoy the vibrant culture of Chinatown, hark back to the empire at the Raffles Hotel, or even just shop until you drop on Orchid Road, Singapore is an amazing place that you will want to visit again and again.

The Raffles Hotel

Yes, it is a cheesy tourist trap, but having a Singapore Sling in the Long Bar of the Raffles Hotel is a must. The beautiful hotel with it’s white, colonial style frontage, has been a favourite haunt of the likes of Rudyard Kipling for over 100 years. Today, tourists enjoy the Singapore sling and the famous monkey nuts, which you must eat by discarding the shells onto the floor. At the end of your experience, you can purchase your Sling cocktail glass to relive the experience at home.

Eating out in Clarke Quay

Clarke Quay is a brilliant destination when it comes to eating out in Singapore. There are a vast range of great restaurants, many of which also double up as nightclubs as the night progresses. This is the place that my husband first tried Red Snapper, at Red House Seafood restaurant, where the food is fresh and delicious. Clarke Quay has plenty of variety in food available, with steak, Vietnamese, Japanese and traditional Malaysian all catered for. You can find out more about what and where to eat in Singapore in this great blog from Cheapflights.

Shopping on Orchid Road

Orchid Road is a must visit if you love to shop. It is 2.2kilometres of shops and department stores, including the now iconic Tang Plaza. You can find everything you are looking for on Orchid Row, from designer wear to high street fashion, gifts, food and electrical goods, which are a good bargain in Singapore.

Whilst on Orchid Row, you can visit ION Sky, which gives you the best views of Singapore, from a viewing platform with 360 degree views from 56 storeys up. It’s free too, so definitely worth a visit.

Have you been to Singapore?
