Wallis review – A little blue dress

When Wallis sent me the Ink Lace Ruche Side dress a couple of weeks ago, I never in a million years thought that this particular dress would become my ‘go-to’ frock, perfect for all manner of occasions, easy to wear, and versatile enough to team with a range of other colours, including metallics. This dress has already been worn for two special occasions. Forget the ‘Little black dress’ and meet instead the ‘little blue dress.’

This is a classic 60s shaped shift dress. The neckline is almost slash style – quite high, but with pleated detail, whilst there is also ruching on the side that adds another element to the dress. The lace hangs slightly lower than the stretch underlayer, and this has a back zip fastening, although, due to the stretch nature of the dress, I just put this over my head.

The dress is what I would call French Navy, not the dark navy that can often be mistaken for black, but a warmer, richer shade that is obviously blue. I have teamed this with pink, just because I love the two colours together, and also a silver grey which again works really well with blue.

I first wore this dress to a film premiere night at the Everyman Cinema. It was a chilly night, so I teamed it with a pink cardigan and Mary Janes for a 1960s style look. I added pearls, again for that Jackie Kennedy styling.

I’ve also worn the dress for a trip to the theatre. Again it was a rather chilly evening, so I added a Laura Ashley cropped cardigan (£1.99 from a charity shop – bargain!) and a pair of heeled shoe boots from Spartoo to try to ward off the early spring chill.

This dress is now quite low stock due to the current sales price, but it also comes in a great, zesty orange colour that would be lovely against a summer suntan.
