Period Pants – What Are They?

It is true to say that, as a woman, you would probably have to be living under a rock not to have heard about period pants over the last year or so, they have been a big news story. But, what is also true is that there are many people who are still not really sure about them, don’t really know how they work, and what the real benefits of them are. This post is about answering some of those questions, and dispelling some of the fears around period pants.

How Do They Work?

Period pants are designed to hold the fluid that comes from your period, and to then store it without it leaking onto your clothing. They are odour proof as well as leak proof, and are machine washable, so they can be used again and again. This makes them far friendlier to the environment than either sanitary towels or tampons. They work well for people who don’t like tampons, but find many problems with sanitary towels being too bulky, or too leaky, or that they slip a lot.

How long can you wear them?

The truth is that this depends on the individual, and the heaviness and severity of your period. For some women this can mean they can wear their period pants all day, while others can only wear them for a few hours – maybe for doing sport, or if they are heading out and want a smoother line in their clothing.

Weekiss, one of the leading names in period protection underwear, suggests that you need to work by trial and error to decide how and when you wear your period pants. They cleverly suggest that you first wear these on one of the weaker, less heavy days of your period and then work up to the heavier days.  They explain:-

This way you will quickly find out how long you can wear it and when you should rather combine it with other period products for safety’s sake.

So why choose them?

One of the main reasons is sustainability, both for the environment, and for your pocket. Once you have made your initial outlay for your products – maybe buying 3-4 pairs, then that is it, these should last you for at least a year, if not two, as you can wash them and then wear them again. For each period you probably buy two to three packs of towels or tampons, using around 4-7 per day depending on heaviness of your period, and this is then immediately a waste product that needs to be disposed of. As we move away from single use items, this is one clear way to help our planet.

Comfort and Style

Many people comment on the comfort levels of wearing period pants, because they are so similar to your normal style of underwear. In fact, if you purchase your items from a reputable brand like Weekiss, you can actually chose different styles including hipster, high waisted and boy shorts styles (you can see a full range of styles here, you may be surprised at the variety available.) so you can wear your preferred style.

Not only do the pants come in a variety of shapes, they also have different styles including everyday looks, sexier, laced edger styles and sporty styles.

If you have not yet tried period pants, 2023 may just be the time to change your time of the month.
