A Christie For Christmas 2024
Once upon a time, well, in the 20th century at least, there was the festive tradition of ‘A Christie For Christmas‘.Each year, starting in the 1950’s. Agatha Christie wrote a new book that would be published in time for the Christmas market, and so the tradition of ‘ A Christie For Christmas’ began. It’s a tradition that I still follow, always having a new edition of a Christie classic to add to my collection, even though I have already read all the stories many times over.
If you are about to start your own collection, or if you want to gift ‘ A Christie for Christmas’ this year, a good place to start is with Agatha’s own yuletide stories. The key one is Hercule Poirot’s Christmas, a story that is one of my personal faves, and is a story with a lot of blood, as Agatha herself proclaimed. This is a brilliant Christmas murder mystery, with Poirot at his inimitable best.
You can currently find this book in Waterstones in both hardback and paperback editions. The hardback edition was the first Agatha Christie book I ever bought, mainly due to the amazing, art deco cover.
The hardback edition also makes a great companion piece to the anthology ‘The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding‘ which has another Hercule Poirot mystery at its centre. This is the only short story in the anthology with a Christmas theme, but it is a good one, and I totally love the newest cover.
If you are looking for other Winter themed stories, then I would recommend The Sittaford Mystery, which takes part in a very Wintry setting, or The 4.50 from Paddington, which is also set at Christmas, although it is hardly mentioned.
The Midwinter Murders anthology is another beautiful book and has a good selection of mysteries set during the coldest season.
Other Books, other gift ideas
There have been other releases from the Agatha Christie estate this season, including a great puzzle book and some stationary items that are perfect for budding authors.
If you’ve read all the Agatha books and are looking for new titles from the Golden Age of Crime, you could try a book from one of Agatha’s contemparies, Ngaio Marsh, whose ‘Tied Up In Tinsel’ has a special edition that has been released for Christmas 2024.
