A day of relaxation at the Amala Spa

The Amala Spa is an oasis of calm in the middle of the busy city of Birmingham. Situated at the Birmingham Hyatt Regency Hotel, the day spa offers six, state of the art treatment rooms, as well as a fitness centre, swimming pool and steam rooms. Last week I was given some respite from the hustle and bustle of the school holidays when I experienced some of the treatments that the spa has to offer.  I can honestly say I left the Amala Spa feeling totally renewed and invigorated.

The Spa itself is beautiful, on walking down the steps and entering, you feel like you are in another world – one of peace and tranquility. My locker was ready, with a robe and slippers waiting for me. I was impressed by the changing rooms, which were spacious and had lockers large enough for the two bags I was carrying with me that day. Towels were also provided, and toiletries could be requested at the reception desk. Basically, you don’t really need to take anything with you other than your swimsuit.

DSCN8636[1]I enjoyed two very special treatments at the Amala Spa. Before the treatment I filled in a form giving both medical information, and what I was looking for at the spa. I was really looking for a pick me up, I have been working very late due to school holidays so feel a little tired and stressed. In addition, lots of summer holiday sunshine have left my skin feeling dry and with some redness.  The treatments I experienced were designed to address these issues.

DSCN8642[1]My first treatment was a Swedish Massage. This is a traditional, full body massage that uses pressure to help you feel help the body feel totally relaxed. The amount of pressure applied is up to you, as I suffer from high blood pressure, the pressure applied had to be gentle. This massage is totally relaxing, you can actually feel the stress leaving your body – I was so relaxed at times I thought I would go to sleep. The candlelight, gentle music and the scents of the massage oil all add to the general feeling of calm. The massage lasted for a full hour, which was total bliss, but 30 minute sessions are available if you are short of time. (Click here for more details.)

Using deep cleansing and toning, with hot towel treatments, my skin looked and felt so clean and glowing after this treatment.  The session lasts 30 minutes and costs £35 – I would so recommend this as a something to treat yourself too.

DSCN8643[1]I used the rest of the afternoon to try out some of the other facilities the Amala Spa offers. It was such a warm afternoon that a dip in the pool was refreshing, whilst there was no way I wasn’t going to try the warm water of the whirlpool bath. The swimming pool at the Hyatt is the longest hotel pool in Birmingham, perfect for those who are serious about their swimming and love this form of exercise. There is also a steam room and a sauna in the pool area.
