Gok Wan for Sainsburys – Latest Collection
The latest collection from Gok Wan is set to launch in Sainsburys stores on Thursday, and it is quite a departure from previous ranges. Where past Gok Tu collections have been very body conscious, with curve hugging dresses, pencil skirts, and flattering wide leg trousers, the new range seems to have taken influence from the high-fashion, sports luxe designs of Alexander Wang, with a bit of scuba dress design a la Philip Armstrong thrown in for good measure.
This collection is chic, but has a decidedly casual slant, with boucle bomber jackets, acres of khaki and soft grey and retro sports inspired styles all included. I think Gok has been really clever with this collection, making sure there are lots of great pieces that can be worn everyday, like the khaki parka, which is simply perfect for the school run, or watching football on a Saturday afternoon.
But Gok also loves glamour, and so we also get the very slinky black dress that reminds me of the neoprene styles loved by Philip Armstrong. whilst the slouchy styled Bardot jumper are like something the ultra glam Lana Del Rey would wear.
My favourite piece is the khaki maxi skirt, which is just so versatile. This is a piece that will look great with boots and a soft knit jumper right now, or teamed with a simple white vest and tan sandals come the summer. It is very 1990s, very Claire Danes in ‘My so called Life’, and eminently wearable!

Oh dear, what has Gok done. I’ve loved his previous collections, but this season collection gets a thumbs down from me. Too baggy, too wide and long for my petite frame 🙁

It is certainly very different from the Roland Mouret styled pieces he has created in the past. I agree this may not be perfect for petite figures, or curves for that matter.

Think you’re right Carol. I’m petite, and with the exception of the black dress, I wouldn’t wear any of this.

I think you make really valid points about this collection – it does seem more suited to the tall and willowy, but there are some good pieces in the full collection – shorter skirts, great cardigans, that may change your mind.

Actually quite like it all, like that it is less serious than his other collections.

Agree – it is less serious, more casual and relaxed, so maybe it will appeal to a different audience?

Not quite sure. It all looks easy enough to wear, but I did love Gok’s wrap dresses and bodycon styles. I suppose he can’t always design the same things, but wonder how popular this will be.

I’ve got some of it – haven’t tried it on yet! The maxi skirt looks cheap and nasty in real life, he has some amazing looking skinny jeans I’ve yet to try and that black dress is as gorgeous in real life as it looks on the model. The off the shoulder top I could only get in pink so I’ll go back for the stone colour soon .. can’t wait to try on later and show and tell with photos when I get the chance tomorrow.
I agree that the last collection he just did was his best to date
