Is Sex and the City coming back to television?
This is the big rumour this morning…and if it is true, it would absolutely make my year! According to some sources, including today’s Mail on Sunday, the iconic and much missed Sex and the City may be making a welcome return..to TV.
It seems that another tv show is a definite possibility. Tha Mail says ‘Sarah Jessica Parker will be producing. She was worried about doing another film after the bad reaction to the SATC2 movie, but a TV show is definitely something she wants to happen.’ However, Darren Starr, the creator of the show, has not given his final yes, but if SJP is on board, that yes may not be far away.
The film franchise looked set to run and run. The first film was a commercial and critical success, and led nicely to number two. But Number 2 took a universal mauling from fans and critics alike, shelving moves to make the film series a trilogy.
In recent months, there has been much excitement about a prequel to Sex in the City based on the books ‘The Carrie Diaries‘ and ‘Summer in the City‘. I wrote about the initial theory that Blake Lively was to play a young Carrie (No thank you I said). Most recent reports stated that Emma Olsen was the new choice, with Blake playing Samantha (Much better casting – especially if all the naughty Blake rumours are to be believed. But now it seems that those plans are to be shelved too as Carrie makes her way back to her rightful place – the tv, in half hour slots.
So, is it right to bring the girls back? Of course it is! We need more women in middle age on the tv, and we need to see what happens next in their story. Does Carrie become a mom? Will Samantha ever calm down? Will Miranda return to work? Is the domesticity Charlotte wanted all that she thought it would be? What level of more mature outfit fabulousness could Patricia Field create for the 40 and 50 somethings that the women have grown into? I really hope we get the chance to find out all this and more very soon!
