Kelly and Tulisa – The great X Factor Fashion Parade so far.

Well, we are now two weeks into the live shows, which means a grand total of four showstopping outfits for the female judges Kelly Rowland and Tulisa. And, as the fashion parade of Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole was one of the definite highlights of previous series, sometimes upstaging the music, I thought I would cast my eyes over what the girls have been wearing so far.

Week 1

Tulisa stepped out for her first live show wearing a form-fitting Herve Leger dress in  a nude shade. This bondage style dress did suit Tulisa, but it frankly left me a bit cold. It would’ve been nice if Tulisa could’ve moved away from the Cheryl style dress for the first show and shown a little bit of her own style, rather than a Cole Clone. Still, her hair and make-up looked great!

Kelly took a more daring approach with an Atelier Versace dress, but again the gamble didn’t quite pay off. The dress was too fussy and too garish. The skirt was, quite frankly, a very strange shape. Full marks for thinking outside the box, but this dress didn’t really hit the spot for me.

The Sunday results show outfits were a major improvement. Maybe opening night nerves were beginning to subside, with both girls showing some serious style and really hitting their own personal fashion stride.

Tulisa went for a short,sparkly number by Vivienne Westwood that I really liked. With her unusual choice of purple heels, a great shade in my opinion, and with her quiff style ponytail, I thought she  looked young, fresh and funky in this dress. A real improvement which suits her style sensibility.

But it was Kelly who really set the glamour status last week.Her shimmering Cavalli dress was stunning, a real show-stopper, and really added true shimmer to the proceedings. On anyone else it could have been slightly showgirl, but on Kelly it was very Monroe. Cavalli is the King of glamour, and his designs are perfect for the high-octane style the X Factor should exude. On a personal note, am slightly biased,  as I once had an email saying Roberto Cavalli had mentioned me in a tweet, which I have kept forever.  This dress was made for Kelly, you can almost hear Beyoncé whispering in her ear ..’Wear that one Kelly – you go girl!’

Week 2

Tulisa tapped into the dark gothic trend that is so hot this season in an interesting black dress with cutout detail. It seemed like an early Halloween outfit and was not particularly impressive. I loved the hair and make-up, but this dress, although unusual, was not a good choice for Tulisa…although it would probably look fab on Daphne Guinness. On Tulisa it looked too old, there was nothing fun about this outfit.

Kelly looked great on Saturday night in a red draped stretched crepe and silk georgette dress by Todd Lynn. (£985 from Net-a-porter)/ This dress was simple and demure, but it looked so elegant on Kelly’s lithe frame, and standing next to Tulisa proved that sometimes less is most definitely more.

On Sunday, Tulisa opted for a very short, prom style dress in an ivory shade by Bruce Oldfield. Although I laughed out loud at one Twitter comment – ‘How does she manage to make every outfit look like something from Lypsy?’, I did much prefer this to Saturday’s effort for so many reasons. The ‘Gloria‘ look (such a great name for a dress!), although again reminiscent of a certain Ms Cole, was young and fresh, and the colour seriously suited Tulisa’s new, darker locks. I adored the embellishment on the bodice, and couldn’t help but wish this had been followed through to the skirt, imagine this with an embellished pencil skirt, rather than the satin prom queen look.

Kelly turned up the heat in the studio a few notches higher with a beautiful, but very revealing black dress by Welsh designer Julian MacDonald. She looked like a goddess, the dress is super-sexy with all the detail in the sheer bodice, but I wonder what the watchdogs will have to say about so much boob on display before the watershed.

So, all in all, an interesting start with Kelly just shading the style stakes, and Tulisa showing bags of potential.The next few weeks could be really interesting!
