Oscar night fashion awards…and the oscar goes to…?

The Oscars are the most important night of the year for the Hollywood fashionista’s. There have been so many memorable dresses over the years – Julia Roberts in Valentino vintage, Renee Zellweger in yellow Jean Desses, Kate Winslet in red Ben De Lisi and Nicole Kidman in Chartreuse John Galliano. There have also been the shock horrors of couture – Bjork coming as a swan, Cher in a red Indian style headdress and Celine Dion in a back to front tuxedo come to mind. So, in honour of the event – I present to you – The Fashion Oscars.

Award 1 – Best Dressed.

There were some truly lovely looks on the Red Carpet this year. Mila Kunis looked so beautiful in a pale lavender and lace dress that was from Elie Saab. I featured this dress on my site a few weeks ago and recognised it instantly. I love the fact that Mila embraces colour – she has worn a variety of different shades during the awards season. Perfect hair and make up too.

Halle Berry in Marchesa looked totally sensational. After the disaster of the frankly, slutty dress she wore to the Golden Globes, Halle was back to her wonderful best in this strapless, sparkly nude dress. The ruffles were so pretty. Top marks.

Hilary Swank in Gucci. This was a wonderful dress, sparkly and feathered, perfect for the Oscars. Hillary played the outfit to perfection with no jewels and a simple hairdo – a dress that glittery needs no accompaniments.

Award 2 – The B**** stole my look award

In tribute to Kelly Osbourne and Guillana Rancic, who both looked stunning on the night, I am christening this category in honour of the fashion police style SNAP slot. Because, although many of these looks were beautiful…they also looked slightly familiar.

Winner – Jennifer Lawrence. Jennifer looked amazing, the best I have seen her at an awards ceremony. The beautiful and simple Calvin Klein red dress was clinging and sexy. With her loose hair she looked a dream…and yet, all I could think of was Scarlett Johannson. Have a look below and see what I mean.

Winner – Melissa Leo. Remember the famous Catherine Walker dress with the upturned colour and beads that Princess Diana wore? It was famously wore the Elvis dress by the press. Well, Melissa Leo certainly did in her Marc Bouwer mirror encrusted dress. In fact, with the mirrors I think she went a step further in her Elvis impersonation.

Winner – Many Moore. Mandy wore a skin and beads style dress, that  whilst beautiful, sort of resembled something that might be worn in a Las Vegas cabaret. By Marlene Dietrich. In the 1970s.

Winner. Reese Witherspoon. Reese always looks amazing on the red carpet. This year was no exception, even if her Armani Prive dress was reminiscent of Julia Roberts in vintage Valentino, and her hair reminded me of Paris Barbie!

Award 3 – The turning back the clock award.

Winner – Gwyneth Paltrow. In her silver Calvin Klein sheath dress, beach blonde hair and suntan, a glorious Gwyneth Paltrow turned the clock back to her Oscar appearance in her Brad Pitt days. Fresh and beautiful, this was California blonde at its best.

The age appropriate award.

Winners – Helen Mirren and Hailee Steinfeld. Helen looked totally wonderful with her new short hair cut and Vivienne Westwood dress. Unlike Madonna, who turned up at the after show parties looking like Mutton dressed as Cher, Helen was stylish and showed that mature beauties don’t need to flash the flesh. 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld looked like a prom princess in a Marchesa dress she helped to design. Exactly how a 14-year-old attending the Oscars should look!

The Tilda Swinton Most Avant Garde award

Has to be the wonderful Cate Blanchett in Givenchy Haute couture. This lavender and neon trim dress was described as a bejewelled bid and a Victorian picture frame on Twitter, but I thought that Cate looked like elegance personified. Loved her hair too, it reminded me of Land mines era Princess Diana.

The Oh no! Not that colour again award

Red! I love the colour, but I was sure sick of seeing it, Anne Hathaway in red Valentino, Sandra Bullock in a Vera Wang column dress, Penelope Cruz in L’Wren Scott, Jennifer Lawrence in Calvin Klein…and an honorary mention to Jennifer Hudson in tangerine halter neck from Versace (which looked red on the red carpet!). It seemed that the bright and beautiful had coordinated with the carpet, and each other. My personal favourite was Penelope Cruz, who deserves a mention for her amazing post baby body.

The Nicole Kidman award for over accessorising.

Nicole escaped this award, wearing very few accessories. The winner of this award is Amy Adams, who wore an amazing purple sequined dress by L’Wren Scott which I loved, but accessorised with a green Cartier necklace which was surplus to requirements. Coco Chanel once talked about taking one accessory off before leaving the house – Amy needed to remove the Cartier!

The Leona Lewis stick to the day job award for design

Winner – Helena Bonham Carter, who co-designed her dress with Colleen Atwood. After looking so great at the SAG Awards, Helena pulled out all the stops, wearing a slash sleeved velvet corset with a long skirt with a bustle. She said ” I’ve always wanted to do 1880s. I thought I’d make my bum look bigger!” Tie this in with the Union Jack garter and you have a weird and wacky outfit not for the fainthearted.

The best dressed bump award

Natalie Portman in Rodarte. A controversial choice, given the ‘how much did they design in the Black Swan’ question. Natalie looked glowing in a very pretty purple dress from Rodarte. She accessorised with Tiffany jewels and an oscar.

The change the record award

Winner – Florence Welch. Wearing yet another nude, vintage style dress with long sleeves and tiers from Valentino. It was pretty and suited Florence’s Titian hair, but it was also a bit Miss Haversham/a bit granny’s nightie, and a bit same old, same old. Would love to see Florence in green, or hot pink. Maybe she should go shopping with Paloma Faith and Nicola Roberts?

The services to Vintage styling award

Winners – Marisa Tomei in Vintage Charles James circa 1950, Michelle Williams in vintage Mia Farrow circa 1967. Marisa wore a beautiful Charles James fantail style midnight blue dress from Lily Et Cie. This was a bit of old Hollywood, although her hair would’ve looked better with a more elegant style. Compare it to Marilyn Monroe in There’s no business like show business to see the same style of dress.

Of course Michelle Williams wasn’t actually wearing vintage.  Her neat column dress encrusted with pearls was by Chanel, and was a vast improvement on the Valentino tablecloth she wore to the Golden Globes. But I look at her image and only see Mia Farrow on Frank Sinatra’s arm.

The eco award for green glamour

The amazing Livia Firth, who again showed that glamour needn’t cost the Earth.  She wore a beautiful dress that had been created from the material of 11 vintage dresses, with fair trade jewels. And she looked just fabulous!

The OMG – You look Fab, is it really you award

Has to go to Celine Dion. This women usually looks a car wreck on the red carpet, but her dress was fantastic at the Oscars. She wore Armani Prive and the elegant cut and colour really suited her. A total and pleasant surprise.

And finally… The awards for worst dressed go to…

Nicole Kidman. She looked so good at the Grammys, but this was just too fussy, white Dior dress was just wrong. It had a strange shape, didn’t seem to fit properly, and was just too pale. The actress sharing this award has to be Scarlett Johannson.  Her Dolce and Gabbana burgundy lace dress looked cheap and tacky and very 1990s, and was also slightly see thru. Combined with a really scruffy haircut, I just couldn’t help but wish that Scarlett Johannson had tried to channel Jennifer Lawrence…
