Cannes – Best looks from 2017

Cannes is always the most glamorous and elegant of all the film festivals, I would go as far as to say it is the most fabulous event on the fashion calendar, it is certainly my favourite. This year was a vintage Cannes for style watchers, with appearances by judge and style icon Nicole Kidman, Diane Kruger, Elizabeth Olsen and Lily Collins. In addition, there was an appearance by style maverick Tilda Swinton (who basically slayed in a series of classic looks) and a whole raft of supermodels, including Sara Sampio, Bella Hadid (another lady having a knockout Cannes), Kendall Jenner and veteran Amber Valleta.

The dresses ranged from the slinky to fairytale, and the daytime looks were not to be sniffed at either, with Emily Ratajkowski showing that a little black dress can never go wrong. I also totally fell in love with Lily Collins daytime ensemble which combined a fitted skirt with a striped, one sleeved top. And, shades of green had a moment, with Nicole Kidman in a dress that called to mind a beautiful peacock, and Tilda Swinton in a 1940s style two piece suit that screamed sophistication.

SAG Awards 2017 – Best Dressed

Awards season is now in full swing, last night saw the turn of the Screen Actors Guild, or SAG, awards. Sometimes called the more relaxed awards, this is the awards ceremony that can often see trouser suits, jumpsuits and tea length dresses, amongst the more formal gowns.  Last night’s red carpet showed pink to be a surprising front runner for hot colour trend, that old Hollywood was alive and kicking as Rachel Evan Wood continued her morphing into Marlene Dietrich, that playing Jackie Kennedy has totally influenced Natalie Portman’s maternity wardrobe, and that the bat sh*t crazy spirit of Bjork on the red carpet is still alive and kicking, as Nicole Kidman turned up as a parrot, a beautiful Gucci parrot. And I, for one, loved it.

Best dressed? I loved Bryce Dallas Howard totally owning those curves in a dress that apparently cost around $300, and Viola Davis who was a vision in white. Viola’s dress was everything, and then when she opened her tiny clutch bag and showed off her folded up flats, I think my girl crush hit around 100. I loved Emily Blunt in an Eastern inspired dress, although I still prefer her with darker locks if I’m honest, and I was so pleased to see Sofia Vergara do something so different in her prom style and sleek hair.

Then to the dresses that polarised opinions. I LOVED Michelle Dockery in her cool stripes, this dress wouldn’t work for the Oscars, but looked sleek and elegant, with a touch of fun, at the SAGs. I was also a little in love with Kerry Washington, but wished it was tailored better, with shorter sleeves and less skirt. Thandie Newton’s whimsical dress is the sort of thing I expect to see on Marion Cotillard, but it is just so exquisitely beautiful and unique that I was so pleased to see Thandie totally own it. And Nicole. Well, she was a stunning bird of paradise, one part parrot, 1 part Shirley Bassey, 2 parts Vegas showgirl. Haters gonna hate, but it is hard to hate Nicole having so much fun with fashion.

A special mention must go out to the Game of Thrones ladies. Maisie Williams is having a storming awards season so far, and the delicate pink and dark lip was another winner. Natalie Emmanuel opted for tea length art deco styling, and the glorious Gwedoline Christie was awe-inspiring in Vivienne Westwood. I walk past the lady once on Oxford Street and she is very tall, very beautiful and a total goddess, so I am bowing down to her.

What was your favourite look from the night?

Cannes – The festival of great Summer daytime looks

I have always been a little obsessed with the Cannes film festival. It epitomises sheer glamour and elegance in the most beautiful of settings. The roll call of the most beautiful, most talented, most famous and sometimes the most infamous have all walked that famous red carpet, publicising everything from films to L’Oreal beauty.  I went to Cannes myself in 2008, when I was pregnant with Joe, and must admit I fell in love with the aura of glitz and glamour of the place.

Memories from my trip to  Cannes

This year’s festival has been one of the most stylish and glamorous in recent memory, with Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, Blake Lively, Marion Cotillard, Cheryl Cole and Jessica Chastain just some of the stunning stars who have captivated with a series of exquisite gowns. But Cannes is not just known for the spectacular evening gowns. Mid Day photo calls mean there are also some pretty terrific daytime looks to enjoy and influence our Summer wardrobes. Theses are looks that we can adapt to suit our style, much more than the Givenchy and Armani evening dresses that we can all but dream of ever wearing.

With Cannes now over for another year, I have selected some of my favourite daytime looks from what is always a sartorial dream. Grace of Monaco stars Nicole and Paz Vega take my ultimate daytime awards for their timeless and elegant looks, but a special mention must also go to Jessica Chastain, who shows that black can be a perfect look on a sunshine day. I have also included Sofia Coppola. Her look was actually from the red carpet, but the midi length makes it perfect for a special occasion held in daytime hours.
