SAG Awards 2017 – Best Dressed

Awards season is now in full swing, last night saw the turn of the Screen Actors Guild, or SAG, awards. Sometimes called the more relaxed awards, this is the awards ceremony that can often see trouser suits, jumpsuits and tea length dresses, amongst the more formal gowns.  Last night’s red carpet showed pink to be a surprising front runner for hot colour trend, that old Hollywood was alive and kicking as Rachel Evan Wood continued her morphing into Marlene Dietrich, that playing Jackie Kennedy has totally influenced Natalie Portman’s maternity wardrobe, and that the bat sh*t crazy spirit of Bjork on the red carpet is still alive and kicking, as Nicole Kidman turned up as a parrot, a beautiful Gucci parrot. And I, for one, loved it.

Best dressed? I loved Bryce Dallas Howard totally owning those curves in a dress that apparently cost around $300, and Viola Davis who was a vision in white. Viola’s dress was everything, and then when she opened her tiny clutch bag and showed off her folded up flats, I think my girl crush hit around 100. I loved Emily Blunt in an Eastern inspired dress, although I still prefer her with darker locks if I’m honest, and I was so pleased to see Sofia Vergara do something so different in her prom style and sleek hair.

Then to the dresses that polarised opinions. I LOVED Michelle Dockery in her cool stripes, this dress wouldn’t work for the Oscars, but looked sleek and elegant, with a touch of fun, at the SAGs. I was also a little in love with Kerry Washington, but wished it was tailored better, with shorter sleeves and less skirt. Thandie Newton’s whimsical dress is the sort of thing I expect to see on Marion Cotillard, but it is just so exquisitely beautiful and unique that I was so pleased to see Thandie totally own it. And Nicole. Well, she was a stunning bird of paradise, one part parrot, 1 part Shirley Bassey, 2 parts Vegas showgirl. Haters gonna hate, but it is hard to hate Nicole having so much fun with fashion.

A special mention must go out to the Game of Thrones ladies. Maisie Williams is having a storming awards season so far, and the delicate pink and dark lip was another winner. Natalie Emmanuel opted for tea length art deco styling, and the glorious Gwedoline Christie was awe-inspiring in Vivienne Westwood. I walk past the lady once on Oxford Street and she is very tall, very beautiful and a total goddess, so I am bowing down to her.

SAG Awards 2016 – Best Dresses

When I first started watching the live red carpet coverage of the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) awards last night, I have to say I was both disappointed and frustrated. I was disappointed with so many of the dresses and looks on display, from Kate Mara in a dress that was literally the colour of dishwater, to Eva Longoria who seemed to have got something on loan from Kim Kardashian’s wardrobe. The SAG awards are known for being slightly more relaxed, slightly lower key than the Oscars or the Golden Globes, but some of the dresses did make you say – ‘really, you had all that choice and you chose that?’

Even current golden girl Brie Larson didn’t really impress me. She looked incredible in her dress from Versace, but I have to say the dress itself was pretty ugly, sort of a pale blue escapologist outfit. I do think this girl could wear a sack and look great, but this dress was nowhere near as successful as the gold look she wore to the Golden Globes. Nicole Kidman, who can be best dressed on any list when the mood takes her, had opted for what can only be described as a multi-coloured, Studio 54 night-dress. Yes, it was that bad.

As well as the bad dresses happening to beautiful people, there was also a frustration that the E! Channel coverage wasn’t offering a really good look at some of the biggest stars, with Julianne Moore, Naomi Watts, Helen Mirren and Rachel McAdams all only being glimpsed at with hardly any view of their dresses. Which is a shame, as they all looked pretty fantastic. Helen Mirren, in particular, was once again an impeccable goddess, showing starlets half her age exactly how to bring glamour and gloss to the red carpet.

Now I’ve had chance to look again at the looks, I’ve had a rethink. My initial thought was that this was a poor red carpet, but actually, on second glance, there were some lovely dresses on display, and at least one cool jumpsuit courtesy of the chic Kristen Wiig. My best dressed on the night was shared between two of the stars of Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke and Sophia Turner, who both chose full skirted gowns that were simply beautiful. A special mention must also be given to Laverne Cox, who is basically killing it on every single red carpet.

Do you have a favourite look from the SAG awards this year?

Red Carpet Style at House of Fraser

Saturday will see the next big event on the awards season calendar, when the Screen Actors Guild awards take place. The SAGs are generally considered to be one of the lesser awards when it comes to the fashion, with simpler styles, casual looks and jumpsuits all making an appearance on the Red Carpet.  This doesn’t mean that there aren’t some seriously gorgeous looks on display (you can check  out last year’s best dressed here.) But it does mean that this is one award ceremony where you could get away with a dress bought ‘off the peg’.

House of Fraser have become a part of the British Red Carpet in recent years, with their partnership with BAFTA meaning that their range of dresses and accessories are no strangers when it comes to the best dressed list. Denise Van Outen, Michelle Keegan, Cheska Hull, Tallulah Riley and Laura Whitmore are just some of the gorgeous ladies who have opted for House of Fraser as a port of call for their full length and fabulous dresses. With the department store stocking brands like Biba, JS Collections, Eliza J and Adrianna Papell, there is no shortage of different styles and choice when it comes to formal wear.

Currently, there are still amazing discounts and promotions which can lead to some hefty savings on formal dresses. This means now is a great time to shop if you have a formal occasion coming up, whether it be a prom, a wedding, a ladies day event, work party, or even your very own awards ceremony. The range of styles and colours ensure that you can buy now, and then wear in the summer. I have selected some dresses below in a range of prices to suit all budgets, with my favourite being the Ralph Lauren metallic cowl dress which is so worthy of a red carpet.
