Stylish Television – The Bletchley Circle San Francisco
The stylish TV drama ‘The Bletchley Circle’ has returned to our TV screens this Summer, with the action now relocated to San Francisco. Only two of the original team are left, Millie and Jean, but they have now been joined by two American codebreakers Iris and Hailey.
I loved the original series on so many levels, the 1950s context, the strong female roles and, most of all, the style, particularly Millie’s. As played by Rachel Stirling, Millie is both intelligent and glamorous, and I loved how she handled all the scenarios with her red lipstick still firmly in place. In the new series, she hasn’t changed, and her wardrobe just seems to get better and better, although new girl Iris is also giving her some serious challenge in the stye stakes. Checking out the new Autumn ranges already in stores yesterday, it is clear that despite the fact that the series is set in the 1950s, the style is very contemporary, very Autumn 2018. From the muted colours, teals, burgundies and bottle greens, to the neat cardigans, pencil skirts and jackets with nipped in waists, the ladylike but rather muted Autumn looks that were on the catwalk for this Autumn/Winter are being very clearly echoed in The Bletchley Circle. In addition, tweed and dogtooth prints are all back, along with the plaids that the other new girl, the tomboyish farm girl Hailey, is totally rocking.
