Happy 1st Birthday TH Baker in Grand Central

Last month saw the first birthday of Grand Central Birmingham, and one of its main retailers, the jewellers TH Baker, held a very special first birthday party at their store. This was a stylish mix of champagne, gin cocktails and canapes, as well as jewellery demonstrations, networking and a chance to admire all the new ranges Vertu, Longines and the new diamond collection, that will be available in the run up to Christmas. I was lucky enough to be on the guest list for this very special evening.

The event was also marked by glorious gourmet gin and tonics that were created by mixologists. I loved the mixture of gin and cherry blossom, a concoction I had never tried before that proved to be totally delicious.dscn3569

Happy Birthday Style Birmingham #Style50

Last week so the most glittering, glamorous party of the year in Birmingham. Style Birmingham magazine was celebrating 50 issues and 10 years with a glamorous shindig in the new Canalside venue. The champagne flowed, the music played and the food was deliciously naughty, and I was lucky enough to have an invite. So, with my sister Jodie as my plus one, I had the naughtiest, most decadent school night in quite a while.

The canalside venue at The Cube looked amazing. I was lucky enough to have had a tour around the site before it was finished, and had basically struggled to see how this would be a venue, despite the stunning views across the canal. But the blank space proved to be the perfect canvas, and with blow up sofas, bars in three corners of the room, giant light up letters spelling out style, and a 1970s, Studio 54 style light up dancefloor, this was the perfect venue for a very special occasion.

The party had been organised by Style and East Village Life, one of Birmingham’s leading PR companies and one who certainly know how to throw a party. There was a Champagne bar, a cocktail bar serving specially created cocktails for the evening (I had the East Village and it was divine!), as well as a bottle bar for those who like their drinks to be made with hops. The food consisted of delicious burgers, pizza and churros with chocolate sauce, but there was also a cute candy floss stall offering all flavours of floss, as well as popcorn. I’m not sure what flavour I got, but it was blue and I found it in my hair and stuck to my face the following morning, which I’m guessing means I had a good time!

Style 50 was a fabulous night and it was lovely to see so many Birmingham bloggers and friends amongst the guests. I had a wonderful time, well worth the hangover on a school night.

The Brides Trail launch at the Grosvenor Casino

I have been to lots of launches in my time as a blogger. Restaurants, hotels, fashion ranges, new beauty products, even toy launches – I have done them all. But I had never been to a book launch, which is unusual, as I am a voracious reader who loves a new book and book shops more than, well, pretty much everything.

But all this changed on Monday night, when I , accompanied by my sister Jodie, attended the launch of the latest thriller from author AA Abbott. The Brides Trail follows the mysterious disappearance of a glamorous croupier, Kat, and the race to find her by her friends, and also by a sinister knifeman who seems intent on killing her. As the tension mounts, the action moves from Central London, to the seedier parts of Birmingham, including secret tunnels that run under the city’s Jewellery Quarter. It’s a page turner that offers twists and turns at every step, and is already gaining great reviews on Amazon (You can order your copy of the book and read reviews here.)

With a beautiful croupier at the centre of the story, the only place that could possibly host the book launch was a casino, and the Grovesnor Casino on Birmingham’s Broad Street was a suitably glamorous and glossy venue. I was really pleased to see David from Twitter’s Brum Hour, who had been involved with the design of the cover, a memorable deep red affair with a ladies hand, a stunning ring and a trail of blood – think Agatha Christie at her most effective, with touches of Saul Bass Hitchcock movie posters. The champagne and chat flowed as a eclectic mix of bloggers, book lovers, critics and publicists mingled ahead of a much anticipated reading by the author herself.

Helen aka AA Abbott, was resplendent in a stunning French Connection dress and introduced the book with a little bit of background, and then read a couple of segments that gave a flavour of the story. These were really well received and enjoyed by the audience. There were then further opportunities for networking and even the chance to take a turn at the Roulette and Blackjack tables – although time didn’t quite allow me to have a go at this (but definitely next time!).

I had a wonderful evening and would like to thank Helen for the invitation, I’m sure the book is going to be a huge success.
