Gastric Banding Procedures – Are They Safe?

For people who are morbidly obese, and for whom conventional weight loss methods are no longer effective, weight loss surgery is something that might be considered. One of the most popular of these procedures is the gastric band, not to be confused with the gastric sleeve. There are many reasons as to why this one is so popular, not in the least because it carries very few risks and because insurance companies usually provide coverage for it. However, just because it carries few risks, doesn’t mean it carries no risks at all. It is important for you, if you are considering the procedure, to be aware of these risks so that you can properly decide whether or not it is the right option for you.

The Safety of the Gastric Band

Of all the different weight loss procedures, the gastric band is considered the safest of all, with the gastric sleeve coming second, and the gastric bypass last. One of the reasons for this is because it is done laparoscopically. In fact, the procedure is now advancing so much that some surgeons are being trained in performing it with just a single incision.

However, even the gastric band is a surgical procedure, which means that problems are possible. Bleeding and infection are always possible with abdominal surgery. Usually, this happens almost straight after surgery, which means doctors tend to spot it before you even leave the hospital. Another risk, which will not be spotted as it happens, is that the band can slip. In this case, further surgery will be required to either replace or remove the band itself.

With all gastric surgery, there is the chance of bloating, blockage, and acid reflux. Usually, these three conditions are caused by you not following your diet properly, or the diet not being appropriate. You must discuss this when you have your next consultation with your nutritionist and/or dietician.

One particular problem with the band is that it can deflate, loosen, or even disintegrate, although this is rare. You will have to have regular consultations with your physician, as they will be able to see whether you are progressing properly, which means the band is working. The band deflating, loosening, or disintegrating are also the only three problems that have the potential to be life threatening if they are not addressed properly.

Should You Have the Surgery?

Choosing to have surgery is a huge decision that will impact all of your life, for the rest of your life. Hence, before you commit to it, you need to properly consider your options. Overall, however, most of those who have had the surgery will tell you that it is more than worth it. Yes, there is a chance of complications, but that chance is minor. And the chance of developing complications as a result of being morbidly obese are far more realistic, and also far more likely to shorten your overall lifespan.

DP Curve is launched

This week has seen the launch of the latest plus size collection to hit the High Street. This time around it is Dorothy Perkins who are expanding their range with DP Curve, a new collection that goes from sizes 18 to 28. Dorothy Perkins promise that this collection is specially designed to ‘fit and flatter a fuller figure’.

I have been browsing the site this morning, and have selected my favourite 10 pieces. I like that the collection seems to have something to suit all tastes. There are skinny jeans and leggings with tunics and tops for the rock chick and pretty skater style dresses that will appeal to younger girls. But what I love most is that there are some really sophisticated and glamorous pieces in this collection, certainly perfect with one eye looking towards Christmas.

My absolute fave picks are the bodycon dresses in gold and silver, I love the shape, the sleeves, the length and the glitter. These are so reasonably priced and are just perfect for dressing up or down, you could easily throw a biker jacket over these and look amazing.  The zig zag skirt is also fabulous, I would add a simple black silk camisole to this, and a statement necklace in silver and this would be party ready.

There are many more fab pieces in this collection, all reasonably priced and well worth a look.

High Street Outlet review – Tallulah Jacket

September is here, and the days are already seeming to have a slight chill. So it is the perfect time to add a lightweight jacket to your wardrobe.  There’s still a chance of sunny days, but night’s are cooler, so a jacket that can take you from work, and will also be great for the weekend is a shrewd investment buy that you will get lots of work with. Once again, High Street Outlet has come up trumps with the ex Monsoon Tallulah jacket that comes in both blue and pink.

The Tallulah jacket has a relaxed boxy style, almost like a man’s silk blazer from the 1980s (sooo Miami Vice.) The style is slightly oversized, but not too baggy, and it has an open front design with no buttons. Two front patch pockets finish the design making this a very wearable piece that could easily take you from day to night wear.

The jacket is true to size, I am wearing a size 18 and this is comfortable on me. As much as I love pink, I opted for the blue, which is a gorgeous China blue shade. I have teamed this with jeans and a camisole, along with a pair of Nine West wedges that I had long forgotten about, but have fallen in love with again.

This is just a gorgeous jacket, great quality, and an absolute bargain for less than £15. In all honesty, for that sort of price, you can afford to go for both colours. I know this would work with black peg trousers, or worn as a cover up for a tea dress, or just teamed with skinnies, a classic white t-shirt and ballerina flats.
