With the Cannes Film Festival in full flow, I have decided to dedicate today’s fashion post to the style of the French Riviera, the effortless, glamorous looks that first came to prominence with Brigitte Bardot in the 1950s, and have then been embraced by every style icon since, from Jane Birkin and Audrey Hepburn to Diane Kruger and Michelle Williams.
Breton stripes, straw hats, classic white cottons and gingham peddle pushers, Riviera style has been a classic look that has little changed since the days of Brigitte and Audrey Hepburn. But this season, Topshop has decided to put its own spin on Cannes style staples and have created a collection that gives a refresh to the looks of La Croisette.
So what spin has Topshop added to the mix? Well, there are Breton stripes on jumpsuits rather than confined to Beatnik chic tops a la Jean Seberg. Bardot tops are not just to be worn with jeans, but can be teamed with this season’s 1970s style denim skirts in midi length, or wide legged palazzo pants that bring Wallis Simpson to mind.
Accessories are metallic or classic white, including a rather gorgeous pair of clogs that have a definite Alexa Chung look to them. All in all, this is a great holiday wardrobe look, whether you are lucky enough to be heading to Cannes, or just enjoying a staycation.
