Getting Set For Summer With Gudrun Sjoden

I’m having a fan girl moment for Gudrun Sjoden once again. I honestly believe that when the weather turns brighter, there is genuinely nothing better than turning to their eco-cotton creations that look stylish and keep you cool. Gudrun’s Summer creations are made for packing in your suitcase, they weigh next to nothing, feel cool and lightweight when you are wearing them, and yet still look good enough to take you from the beach to sightseeing around the city.

The dress I am wearing here totally illustrates this point. This is the Monsun eco-cotton dress which has a loose flowing style and, hurrah! is a dress with pockets. This dress is a dream to wear as it is in a very thin cotton, but it is not see-thru, as some cotton dresses tend to be. The fabric has a slight pleat to it, and a wonderful floral pattern that reminds me of aboriginal art.

This dress is super comfortable to wear, another reason why it is such a great holiday choice. The sleeves are not tight, the dress does not cling, and it has pockets – always a favourite feature for a day dress. The style is best worn loose and flowy, with the hippy-sh, Marrakesh style vibes that Gudrun is famous for, but could be adapted into a slightly more formal look with heels and a smart blazer. When the weather turns cooler, you could add a denim jacket, or even wear this layered over leggings in order to make it earn a place in your wardrobe. The dress really is versatile.

If you visit the Gudrun Sjoden website right now you will be in time for the early bird prices for the brand new Summer ranges, this time inspired by the wonder and design of Japan.

Seasonal Style at the Botanical Gardens

Last week I was a guest of Barques PR at a gorgeous afternoon of food, fizz and seasonal fashion. The Seasonal Style event, which is held annually at Birmingham’s beautiful Botanical Gardens, was a feast of the best fashion and beauty around, with a style presentation by the lovely Beth Goodrham, and beauty demonstrations by Bobbi Brown’s leading artist Amy Conway. Add into this a host of stalls with exhibitors including Pai Skincare, Rachel Simpson shoes and Jo Malone, and you have a most glamorous afternoon.

The day started with champagne and a browse around the stalls. John Lewis was a supporter of the event, and representatives from the &Beauty department were out in force, with Bobbi Brown, Pai Skincare and Jo Malone all offering advice (and arm massages). There were also gorgeous pieces of jewellery from Livto jewellery and Hannah Walker jewellery, along with lust inducing designer handbags (Chanel anyone?) and vintage furs from Fellows Auctioneers.

The show

Birmingham Stylist Beth Goodrham had chosen outfits from the vast range at John Lewis to highlight key looks that will work for all summer occasions, from race days and ladies days, to summer weddings, and even more casual occasions. The outfits came from a range of brands, from Ted Baker, Hobbs, Kin, Mint Velvet and Reiss.  The models used were woman who had attended the event, which was a lovely touch, and Beth truly styled them to perfection – there wasn’t an outfit I wouldn’t have worn, and there were so many pieces I absolutely loved.

Amy Conway showed the audience lots of quick fixes for glowing, healthy looking skin, using the lovely Lucy from John Lewis as a model. These were the sort of 5 minute pick me ups that even the busiest of woman could attempt – I definitely need to invest in a foundation stick from Bobbi Brown now.  I loved how Lucy’s skin looked so healthy, and picked up tips on using blusher and bronzer.

The meal was catered for by Ampersand, the Botanical Garden’s catering team. It was a deliciously balanced two courses, with chicken for the main, and the most delicious Lemon Cheesecake and raspberry sorbet for dessert.

I had the most wonderful afternoon with the team from Barques, it was lovely to put on a pretty dress and enjoy fashion, beauty and fine food.

Six great ways to accessorise this Summer

I love summer. Who doesn’t? But I have to admit that I hate the rat race. There is so much to do and not enough time to do it before the sun comes, and the worst thing that can happen is to not be ready. When it comes to hitting the beach in a bikini I´d need to hit a gym months in advance. The thought of all those perfectly toned girls sitting next to me is enough to make me shiver (as I reach for another ice cream though…). But, getting ready for the summer doesn’t have to be difficult, especially when you´re letting your clothes do the talking! In fact, I followed these accessory tips this year and couldn’t have been happier.

Statement Earrings

There is no better way to stand out from the crowd than with bold earrings. They are hard to get right because they can look tacky if you don’t pick the perfect ones. But, if you do they can transform your look in a very subtle way. When summer hits, go with jewels that are light and transparent for the best effect. Statement earrings are risky, but they are well worth it so give them a chance.

Embellished Sandals

I love my shoes, but when summer turns up, it’s like I have to forget about them for the season. That is unless you pick sandals and flats that are bold. They don’t have to be crazy different, so embellished sandals with a quirky design are a fantastic option.

Nothing grabs attention like a tattoo. They are instantly recognisable and make people think, mainly because a lot of people want one but don’t have the guts. Here’s a little tip: you don’t need the guts either. Temporary tattoos are a great alternative for people who have always wanted one, but who don’t want to mark their body permanently in the process. They look legitimate so no one will ever know the difference, but after a couple of months it will start to fade away.

 Rings And Watches

There is no better look than a subtle watch and ring combination. If you do it correctly, it is a style that is perfect for the summer. Go for real silver or gold rings and watches, and the more metal, the better. Silver tends to be the best option because it is a lot easier to combine with your style, plus fake gold looks tacky. Wear them t-shirts or casual dresses for the best look.

DIY Vests

Get a dress or a t-shirt that you don’t wear anymore and attack it with the scissors. Stylish vests are hard to come by, so a DIY vest is a fantastic alternative. You can have the style that you have always wanted, plus it doesn’t cost you any extra. Even better, it´s lots of fun!

 Long Necklaces

Long necklaces complement your style perfectly. They look great with simple t-shirts and tank tops, plus they don’t touch your skin that is a must for summer accessories.

You never have to worry about looking bad during the summer again with these tips. You will never have looked better!
